Female virgins after college?

recently, I had a heated discussion with an idiot who thought that 10+% of girls graduating from college are probably still virgins. i can't imagine its any more than 1, maybe 2%... with those girls being the fairly unattractive types that have issues attracting anyone. thoughts?

  • I'd say that your friend currently appears to be infinitely more intelligent than you. I'm not disputing the statistics (though, I doubt they're accurate figures. I just don't have the energy to search for the recent national surveys regarding this topic); it's a known reality that abstinence rates have dropped drastically since the 1960s. Rather, I take offense to your suggestion that those who wait only do so because they can't find someone. I, for one, know many girls who graduated from my sorority last year who are gorgeous women but have made the decision to wait until marriage. Several of them have long term boyfriends who pinned them (essentially proposing) before the end of the year but even since they've remained true to their convictions. Considering the wide range of upbringings within this country, I'd say there is a sizable population within the United States (granted, most are probably either from religious communities or otherwise traditional families) that wouldn't even think about pre-marital sex. Of the rest who choose to be abstinent, I suspect only a very small, immature section of that group has made that decision involuntarily.

For the record, I'm very proud of the fact that I'm waiting and trust me, it's not because I can't find a suitor. I just don't think the majority of guys are worth my virginity and I'm positive that the one who is will wait for it. It's really that simple.

    • Lol thanks for the opening insult, but beyond that, alright, thanks for your answer. now I guess my next question would be, how many of these girls hold onto their virginity because its what is right for with without strong religious convictions to back up this sentiment

  • I'm a virgin and I have been out of college for a year. I don't consider myself "unattractive with issues" and from the male attention I get when I am out, I don't think they feel that way either. I'm not waiting until marriage, I just haven't found a man worthy of my virginity yet. I don't have a problem with people who choose to sleep with a guy early on in the relationship--thats their choice (just as my virginity is mine) and maybe its considered to be "normal" among the after college age group--it doesn't mean that there is not another "normal" in that same age bracket where people choose to wait for when they are ready--not becuase they can't get any.

You may just be passing judements on your experiences and the people you hang out with. And just becuase a girl dresses a certain way or acts a certain way it does not always mean that she has had sex. there may be someone that you know who does not care to share her virgin status with you, yet she can still engage in a conversation about sex.

When people have asked me how many people I have slept with and I tell them 0--they usually don't believe me and assume I just don't want to tell the "my true number."

it is society that has placed the assumption in people's heads that once someone is a certain age there is no way they could still be a virgin--unless they are super relgious or unattractive. what we think--is not always reality.

    • Yea I guess I have very little faith in women at this point lol. all of the "good girls" I knew from high school are sleeping around quite a bit at this point.

    • Then I gotta ask, are YOU sleeping around quite a bit that this point? I may be a virgin but I don't respect with a double standard. If you're not a virgin then don't expect the women you date to be either.

    • Yea I am, although I really regret passing up the chances I had. I have yet to meet a girl with any really integrity, and the one girl I met who I thought was a really substantial person ended up just losing her virginity to the biggest player either of us knows

  • i'm a virgin, because I'm waiting for the right guy..my friends lost their virginity during one night stands because they were DESPERATE.

i was a model, working on 2 campaigns and a major beauty pageant contestant. I don't want to sound conceited because I really don't find myself that attractive, but I can't walk down the street without cars honking or guys looking at me like their eyeballs are about to fall off.

i think there's more to be said about a girl keeping her virginity because she actually has standards vs. girls who lose it because they don't

    • Ps: I'm a masters student

    • Nice.

  • according to an MIT study (dated 2001, so... it is 9 years old) from the counterpoint news magazine, 13% of graduating undergrad females US-wide are virgins.

as for their attractiveness? I'm sure a portion of them are 'less mass desireable'. But don't discount that a large portion of america is of a very conservative sociopolitical bend and they tend to be more likely to be virgin at that age due to the general religious society. Not being negative about it, just trying to draw assumptions out of a pretty detail free study. They can make up a good number of people in that percentage there. They choose abstinence regardless of what their attractiveness may be.

On a negative note: those who take abstinence pledges are more likely to get an STI than those who dont. I always find that fact hysterical.

    • Lol ya that last tidbit is funny the only married women I've known of to have an affair is the daughter of a baptist preacher and a pro-life advocate. life is full of funny ironies. i'm honestly curious what % of those girls that answered they were virgins just lied to save face / feel better about themselves?

    • These thing are usually anonymous, so it wouldn't need to be to save face. I think that where I went to undergrad (Jersey) the number was much closer to 7%. I imagine at southern baptist university it might be like 20%. But country wide its 13% apparently. I'd believe that stat. I honestly don't imagine that many ladies would say their virgins if they arent. after sec the first time, its really not a big deal. no one seems to care but current virgins.

    • How does that negative note work? No sex and they get an infection? WTF

  • Mmmm. I don't think 1% or 2% is accurate. There are other factors, such as personal decision, parents, bad history with males, sexual orientation, and religion. It might not be because they're unattractive. I think it depends on the girls at the college as a whole though.

  • Well I'm a virgin about halfway through college. I hope I meet a special guy that steals my heart before I graduate. But if I don't I really hope people don't think I'm the unattractive type that has issues hahah

    • I'm not very religious at all actually.

  • Well, I didn't lose my virginity until after college, so I suppose that makes me ugly. But most people tell me I'm very pretty, and I've not struggled to attract guys. I just was very shy and nervous about sex. I had a boyfriend my entire sr. year, but he didn't pressure me and HE actually didn't want to have sex even when I was ready before him, so we dated a year before we had sex, which happened after graduation.

I've a friend who didn't lose hers until she was 28. She is super cute, super friendly, bubbly outgoing personality, and guys always love her. But though she dated guys, she was shy & conservative about sex, and the right opportunity didn't come up until later.

To be honest, your theory sounds judgmental.

  • My thoughts? You are an ignorant idiot.

It doesn't matter what height, weight, shape, race, ethnicity, skin color, hair color a girl is,there is always some horndog out there ready to f*ck her.

There are many issues to consider.idk, religion, background, morals?Idk,important things.

    • Ignorant idiot? /shrug I just have my perspective. I might be wrong, and if I happen to meet one (ya, just one) cute girl in my life that hasn't f***ed around, I'll change my paradigm but my pov is just based off of what I've seen so far

  • I've been told I'm attractive, but just graduated and am still a virgin at age 23.

  • She's high.

  • there are a lot of factors to consider including what kind of college, some are more conservative while others are a lot more liberal.
