Model bodies...too thin, or just right?

Everyone seems to look at the Victoria's Secret models as the "ideal body." Don't get me wrong, those girls are beautiful, but I do find their weight to be a little bit disturbing. Their faces, hair, skin, height, everything is really lovely, but the fact that some of them are only 110 lbs at 5'11" is shocking to me. It looks like it photographs really well, but in person, they must look like skeletons. I am just over 5'8" and 125 lbs and my boyfriend is always making fun of me for my ribs sticking out. I actually want to GAIN a little weight! I can't imaging losing 15 lbs and being almost 3 inches taller. I probably sound jealous or something, but that is really not what the purpose of this post is. I guess my question is, do guys really like women to be that thin? Is that really the ideal body?

  • I know I'm not a guy but ill answer anyhow. I'm bisexual and I like women.

if I had to sit here and put together my physical ideal of a woman, there isn't one particular look but I do find curvy women sexier on just a physical level. I like butts, hips, thighs, and boobs, and a defined waist. I just do. its hot to me. now the boobs don't have to be big. they can be small.

either way, it doesn't mean I can't end up finding a very thin model body sexy, but usually that will only happen if I have some kind of personality or emotional connection with her. when I really like someone, they become more attractive than they would have been. some model thin women are attractive, but generally not my IDEAL body type. For example, I think Tyra is much sexier these days now that she's curvier than when she was stick thin starting out. That's the look that much of the high fashion industry favors though.

I actually like watching runway shows and the fashion and the glamour. I get that with less curves, there is less distraction from the clothing. The clothes fall better on a boyish, thin frame because its almost just as it would look on a clothes hanger. A girl with lots of curves not only draws more attention to her body over the clothing, but also her body alters the shape of the clothing drastically. the clothes end up looking differently than the designer intended, which is fine on the average woman, but not while they are on the runway presenting their pieces and how they think they are supposed to look. I don't necesarily agree with this logic (I would prefer to see more curves on the runway) but I understand it. It also allows really awkward looking, lanky, skinny girls to shine. All girls struggle with body image. So if the average guy loves curves (not saying he does, I'm saying IF) where a girl grows up, and she doesn't have any, and on top of that she's skinny and really tall, she may be made fun of and stuff. Then she's picked up by a modeling agency and given a makeover and she feels sexy, confident, etc. Now that image being So emphasized doesn't do much for the confidence and self esteem of curvier girls but that's how the story goes.

For your question, yes some guys really do like women to be that thin. That is going to be the ideal for many men, specifically in western, mainstream, white culture. Everyone likes different things though. If you go around the world, or even just to minority cultures here in the U.S., the vision on beauty is very different. I'm part african american, afro-latina, and white. on my black side a girl that skinny won't get much attention. A curvy girl will be the one beating men off with a stick usually. My white side of the family is different though. The women who don't even have many curves to begin with think they are too curvy on their butts, hips, thighs. The girls who are already slim want to be thinner. its very different.

Dont stress it. Just come as you are. People like different things.

    • Also I think the woman aren't doing it to please men. Fashion is very much centered around female visions of beauty. A lot of men are in it as well, but its a different world. Having said that, I've seen bone skinny women in Sports Illustrated so many men do enjoy seeing those frames. Just understand that its a career move. Not an "I want a man" move. So they aren't as concerned as you are about whether men want to see them or not most likely. They are trying to sell ads, clothes, etc.

    • excellent asnwer!

  • Ouch...some of these comments really hurt me because I'm one of those tall thin girls, and naturally so. In fact I used to be even skinner because my metabolism didn't slow down to just slightly-above-average until recently.

I'm tall, small waisted, slim-limbed, with small breasts (because let's face it, no skinny woman naturally has victoria-secret model boobs). Although my chest size looks deceptively large on me because like I said, I have a slim body with small bones.

In high school, I used to get a lot of grief from girls because they made fun of me for being thin and yet also said they envied me. I used to eat a lot too, as in I hate as much as a football player.

If it's now popular to hate twiggy-models...I'm basically screwed because that's my body type and it's pretty much impossible to change it. You'd be surprised how stubborn genetics can be.

My mom told me she was also ashamed of her body in her youth because she was tall and twiggy except unlike me, she had sizable breasts. She told me girls were extremely mean to her too. So in short, you'd be surprised at how many non-modeling girls with model-type bodies feel ashamed of their bodies. A lot of people automatically assume negative things about you, like you're anorexic or bulimic or a strict vegetarian. I remember one time, a guy in the grocery store stopped me when he saw me buying meat because he was convinced I didn't eat me. Can you believe his nerve?!

    • i was not picking on anyone who looks like this. I used to be underweight, and now I am just in the bottom of the "average" range, so I am still very thin. all the women in my family are this way, so I don't want to be told one more time that I don't understand what its like. I have to force myself to eat a lot just to remain a normal weight. my post was not to say "skinny girls suck". I'm saying that society tells women that being super skinny is ideal, and its very unattainable for some women.

    • You're right. Magazines really messes with a girl's head because average-sized girls think they need to be unrealistically thin for their body type. And skinny girls feel they have to have large breasts even though they're thin (which are typically mutually exclusive qualities). If only it were possible for everyone's body type to be accepted (provided that the weight is a healthy weight)

  • I'm a bigger girl, guys would consider me thick and I have no trouble finding a guy that is attracted to me. Every guy is different, but yes the Victoria Secret models kinda scare me too. Sure they look good, but yea they should be representing different body types. Not saying they need to have someone who is unhealthy, but have a thicker women in there too wouldn't hurt. When you are that tall, its okay to carry more weight, its not noticeable.

The reason Victoria's secret uses the models they do is merely a marketing thing. If you look at any adult magazine, they have women who are thicker. That's what men really like, yes some men like slimmer women, but most would want someone with a little meat. It's the women's magazines that promote this skinny standard. There's always headlines "loose 5 pounds this week" or something like that. Women buy into the idea that skinny is all men want, when really, most men find a variety of different body types attractive.

I personally think a lot of the victoria secret models all look the same, I am not able to tell them apart :P

  • I don't spend a lot of time looking at any models, let alone VS models, but I don't remember most of them being overly thin. I do remember reading that thin models are preferred because they can wear most anything well, but I have not noticed many fitting what was described in the article I mentioned. So I took a look at the VS page (just the "home" page, didn't research the whole site) and the girls I saw on their did not look too thin. I could not begin to guess their height or weight. But I can tell the are well toned, probably due to workouts, not by starving themselves. Their breasts do not fit the "skinny model" type, but of course they are modeling underwear.

Anyway, none of the ones I saw are skinny, or ribs sticking out, whatever. They are appealing. I would also find them appealing if they had a little more weight, but not "fat".

As for you, the asker, I agree with what you said about yourself. If your ribs are sticking out, you should gain some weight. Although I hope your boyfriend is not really making fun of your body. Honesty and encouragement are good. Making fun is bad.

  • some guys do, but... I personally think its disgusting.

they look pretty much like "heroin freaks" in rehab, once you get them in bummy street clothes and take away all the digital "go over the photos" and the makeup...

it makes me wanna throw up.

I have actually had girls brag in college "I'm a MO-del... (sniff)"

I looked right at them, and asked them if they were anorexic, or a coke fiend, or both. (they didn't like that, I forgot I'm supposed to kiss their @$$ when they say rthey are a model, LMAO)

I was real athletic and into outdoorsy stuff when younger, and, thought the girls that played basketball and volleyball were "hot". (they weren't bone skinny, and definitely in shape)

Historically? Look back on "hot" women in movies and such... Marilyn Monroe, mamie dorie, lana turner, young Liz taylor...

all had hips and thighs and such... VERY curvy...

so, where did all this come from? There was a model in the early 70s called "Twiggy", she started all this crap all by herself, and it hasn't changed since...

    it disgusts me.

What Girls & Guys Said

  • Some guys do. I, along with most guys, think its gross. nothing is more unappealing, looks wise, than a girl who can't take care of her own body, whether it's too fat or too thin, whether they're gorging or starving themselves. Biologically, one says that they eat way to much hogging the food supply, the other says that they can't get enough food. Both mean that you and the baby are going to starve. Of course this is all from a biological perspective, but its a pretty good explanation for what we find attractive.

  • Well...I am actually the same build as a Victoria's Secret girl naturally. That is how I was born, and is my normal healthy weight. The only difference is, my thighs are just a tiny fraction larger.
In all honesty, I find a lot of these comments personally offensive and degrading.
I don't understand why people can't just accept that every woman is unique, they come in all different shapes and sizes, and every man has individual taste. Every single woman on this earth is beautiful, no matter what her shape or size, colour, etc.
I think it very wrong to generalise, and say a particular build/group of women are just unattractive, and another group is attractive.
I have found a lot of these comments personally hurtful.

  • They aren't thin, they are healthy and keeping in shape for their career.

I think society has a completely unhealthy view as to what "healthy and curvy is" "curvy" is now a euphemism for overweight/fat and that is seen as the norm.

Now I don't see guys purposely seeking out Victoria Secret models to look at,if they happen to be there they happen to be there, but I've never heard a guy say "I'm gonna get a poster or Adriana Lima/Alessandra Ambrosia/Candice Swanepoel" I hear guys speak of mainstream women(Megan Fox,Beyonce,Angelina Jolie etc) less so of models.

I don't think you sound jealous,I really think you sound confused(which is fine) lol.

    • if you look at their BMI, they are considered to be underweight, which is thin. I remember when the victorias secret fashion show was on, all the guys in my dorm were sh*tting themselves and losing their mind over all the models. and all the girls were feeling sh*tty because they weren't that small. I think they are gorgeous, but I do think that the weight is an unrealistic standard. that's all.

    • I'd just like to say that my BMI puts me in the underweight category but I'm actually perfectly healthy. I've tried gaining weight and it's practically impossible for me because my metabolism is so high. So there ARE people like that who you may think are unhealthy but in reality it's the exact opposite.

    • Thinness is not determined by number, but by the overall look of the body. Victorias Secret is actually very gung ho on having the girls abide by the modeling requirements set after Luisel and her sister died,so I doubt they are underweight in an unhealthy manner. Most of them are popping out children. It's not unrealistic to be healthy and in shape.I've never been one to be bothered by models though

  • there is a difference between what gay guys think looks good on a runway (gays seem to run the fashion industry), and what real men want in their beds.

i don't prefer super tall girls, or girls that skinny.

playboy is pretty much my taste. considering the popularity of that mag, I think it represents a lot of guy's ideal taste. playboy girls arnt runway models. they never have bones showing, etc.

  • Stop picking on us models. We stay skinny for our carreer, not for men. and we're not obsessed with proving wether guys like our weight. K? I'm 5"9 1/2 and 119 and I'm happy, healthy and confident. Some guys like thick girls, others like skinny ones. Stop trying to make guys pick a favorite. Gah it's so annoying!

    • no one is making guys pick favorites. the question was do they actually like super thin girls. and by the way if you're doing it just for a job, it's kind of stupid. Especially since the industry is driving so many girls to eating disorders in order to fit "the image". not hating on you or anything, but I honestly think the point of thing models is stupid. More girls in the world are fuller than the average model. A realistic model would be better recieved by the entire public, not just horndog boys.

    • im just saying that the beauty and modeling industry represents a certain body type that most girls cannot obtain, and in turn, feel bad about themselves for it. yeah, there are plus size models. but they aren't the ones that everyone is drooling over. being really skinny is not bad. but making society think that being really skinny is the way to be beautiful is hard. and I am thin, and used to be really skinny, so I wish everyone would stop pointing fingers saying I don't know what its like.

  • Not my type.

  • Too thin IMO. I like girls with some thickness to them, and I don't care whether the thickness comes from muscle or fat (muscle would be more preferable I suppose).

    • If you want to put on weight you should consider doing resistance training at the gym and not just cardio. Aerobic-style cardio exercise alone breaks down muscle tissue and erodes at both it and fat, so if you keep at it you're bound to keep shrinking. Need to have some resistance/weight training in there with it. It's how all those Beachbody programs work.

    • Also, protein!

  • well knowing me and I am the biggest model freak ever (was a model still am) I know that girls who won't eat or throw up can't walk run ways which is a major part in modeling and victora won't put in any model who does that to themself in their show or photos. but some girls can't help it in real life some just can't gain the weight for me it is really hard I am 5'6" and only 90 lb it is really sad no matter how hard I try I can't gain weight but still have curves I don't get it

    • i understand that some girls are naturally skinny. and that's fine! for years, I was underweight and I couldn't do anything about it. and I'm not saying that the models have eating disorders. I just mean "is it ideal for all women to be that small" because naturally, most women aren't that thin. I just personally find beauty to come in all different sizes, and its sad that so many girls feel so insecure about their weight due to these standards.

    • ya it is sad meda is changing how girl who are not the right weight and have a little bit more curves are not pretty ever heard of plus size all girls are pretty in their own way

    • Them being skinny doesn't mean it's a standard, that means they are in shape and naturally like that and it certainly doesn't give people the right to make them feel ashamed to make girls feel better

  • I don't think you should look at models as the ideal anything. First off, fashion models are mainly underweight. Some of them are naturally like that, others starve to be that. They are hangers for clothing. Secondly, bras are stuffed with "chicken cutlets",photos super air brushed the full nine. That's the industry...its not reality. Whoever said that is just talking out of their arse. And if that's the case, then all guys should have the ideal body AND face of David Beckham. The media projects these highly over the top ideas of what women should be like and people believe it.Dont believe the hype.

  • I am thin like that and I hate it. I have been trying to gain weight my whole life. from what I've noticed a lot of shallow guys like skinny girls or girls with big boobs. it is really annoying.

  • Personally I really dislike skinny girls, to me it's a turn off. In short that really is not the ideal body for the majority of guys.

I prefer slimish girls with natural curves.

  • I really don't. I've never been into the model "type" body. I like my women with some curves. some women I think have the sexiest bodys are Scarlet Johansson and Eva Green.

  • Hell no! I can't speak for all the guys, so as far as I'm concerned, my ideal type of body for a girl wouldn't fit the modern model standard of the tall skinny girl. Many of those models are way too skinny! It's not attractive to me. A girl like this:

    link

is a big turnoff, I'm worried if she's sick or something. Ideal girls' bodies for me would be like these actresses:

Tia Mowry ("The Game" TV show)

Cobie Smulders ("How I met Your Mother" TV Show)

Indira Varma, in Kama Sutra: a tale of love (I'm being specific cause morphology changes with time)

    Leonor Varela in Cleopatra

    Meagan Good

Natural and healthy, that's the ideal!

  • Well, I don't know about all the American models but European models are stunning, and some American models are real great looking too. Kate Moss looks amazing, body-wise, though, to me. She really wows me. She goes from being thin as f*** to being, well, thin. But as American models go, bigger.

For the record, I really really dig underweight girls, or marginally overweight girls, or girls who are real fat. Hahaha.

  • Way too thin. I don't even find the girls in Maxim magazine attractive because they are like sticks. I'm really hoping the model industry and society as a whole will get back into the ideal that a woman at a healthy weight, or even a few extra pounds, is far more attractive than a stickly thin model.

    • I've never seen any girls in maxim that look like sticks and I used look it alot

  • I don't know any guys that like reallly skinny girls.

I am 5'5 and weigh 130. I want to lose weight but every guy I know says nooo

  • I'm a 230lb man, I don't ever want to date a women that I can see her ribs from under her shirt. I would be scared I braked her.

  • I'm a HUGE fan of Victoria's Secret and the models but I can't help but to think that some of them kind of look sick and gross. Some of them I'm like "ew!" but there are others that are very pretty.

    • i think they are all beautiful women, and some look much healthier than others, but there definitely are those models that look scary skinny. I can't imagine what they look like in person!

  • Most model bodies are too tall, too skinny, too flat on both boobs and butt. It's not attractive to me at all. I like a girl who looks like she can hike the Malibu hills with me -- thick legged, with her inners touching. That to me is really sexy.

  • those models aren't supposed to attract men, we make up an negligible percent of their customer base. they want to appeal to the women who think "if I buy that, I will look like her". I think ideal is like 5'7 115 for me at least
