It's normal but it varies depending on a guy's threshold. Especially if he deals with what they call premature ejaculation, then things just won't last long otherwise. Everybody's different.
Whether he has you in mind or himself in mind, the effect is the same. There's an intense tingling in the pen|s that tends to increase prior to ejaculation. There is of course a point of no return for a guy when it is physically impossible to stop ejaculation so stopping motion for a moment helps prolong things. It seems fairly normal as I said. In my aging body erectile dysfunction is more of a problem but before that time, I had trouble with cumming quickly myself.
Oh yes. And remember the one statement I once heard about orgasms:

That's normal. He's having a great time and doesn't want it to be all over too soon. He wants a chance to give you a nice orgasm. And he knows that stop-start builds anticipation and he'll have a huge orgasm too when the time comes.

What do you mean by pause? Like completely stop, or just slow down a bit during sex? Because if it's just slowing down, he might be doing it to make the orgasm feel more intense.

Its a normal method to avoid finishing sooner then you want. Whether its normal or not depends I guess how often he had to do it.

yea, my boyfriend uses that excuse. I think it's cute. it's fun to know that we can have that effect on men. I don't mind pausing at all, with or without a reason. guys are under a lot of pressure to perform well in bed. as much fun as it is to torture him, I try to do what I can to help him last longer
