Why do I always wake up with a huge boner?

Every morning I wake up with morning wood... why does this happen? Should I just let it die down, or should I rub one out?

At night, cortisol levels drop dramatically, and when cortisol drops, testosterone increases dramatically also. Testosterone in the bloodstream causes erections. Night time and morning erections happen for a FEW reasons.

1. To get blood into the penis to repair and rebuild tissue. The penis is NOT a muscle, but an organ. All tissues of the body need to be rebuilt and repaired often. The penis in a flaccid state has very very little blood flowing into it during the day. Blood flow is the only way tissues can get nutrients for the rebuild and repair.

2. Like I said, cortisol drops, testosterone goes way up, and causes erections.

3. Like someone else said, it closes the urethra so the bladder doesn't empty during peroids of time in the night. During deep sleep, the bladder is very prone to leaks due to the extreme relaxation of the organs and muscles surrounding the bladder and the urethra. During deep sleep, erections are more prominent, and so causes the urethra to become pinched so no urine leaks out. People that wet the bed in their adult years usually have night time erection problems.
