Blow job with a cold sore?

I just recently started going out with this guy. I wanna go down on him and make him happy, but I have a cold sore and I obviously don't want to give him herpes down there from it...although it's almost healed. Is it possible for him to get it if I just completely avoided touching him with the part of my lip that my cold sore is on? It's on the very top so I don't think it'll be too hard.

thanks everyone! I know I should mention it to him, but I'm just scared because I just caught mono recently too (which is why the cold sore showed up I think, because I've never actually had a cold sore before) and might have given that to him since I didn't know at the time we hooked up. Luckily, he's okay with it and we're still hooking up, but if I have one more problem that might actually put him off, you know?

  • Quoted from a health board;

    "You should warn the person beforehand that you have experienced cold sores in the past.

    If they have already had cold sores (oral herpes) like you, they cannot catch genital herpes from you giving them a blowjob.

    However, if they are one of the 40% of people who have never had a cold sore, then you could infect them with genital herpes through giving oral sex, WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE A COLD SORE. The risk is lower when a cold sore isn't present, but low by no means means non-existent.

    I caught genital herpes through receiving oral sex from a partner with a history of cold sores. He hadn't had one in years and didn't have one at the time.

    My best friend also caught genital herpes type hsv1 from receiving oral sex - her boyfriend hadn't had a cold sore since he was 10 years old.

    The risk is always there, and you have just as much responsibility to tell your partners this as you would if you had genital herpes, because if you are giving oral sex, you are putting your partner at the same risk as you would be if you had genital herpes and were having unprotected sex with them.

    Hsv1, the 'oral herpes' virus that causes cold sores, easily causes genital herpes. This kind of genital herpes produces fewer recurrent outbreaks than the other type of genital herpes, hsv2, but symptoms are identical otherwise, and your partner would still have to deal with the stigma of having caught genital herpes.

    I caught genital herpes from a guy I took home for the night my first year in uni. We only did oral, because I thought it was 'safer'. He had no visible signs. But I still caught genital herpes and now have to deal with that - I certainly wish he'd told me he had a history of oral herpes first."

  • don't do it until its complete gone. even in the stage its now, you will still give it to him. just wait another couple of days or a week. if you give it to him, you land yourself in trouble with him. and ruin chances with him.
