Why do you people get offended by rape jokes?

But not jokes about other traumatic events? Like the Holocaust? Daniel Tosh, a well-known comedian, says a rape joke and people (mostly women) are getting pissy about it. WHY? Rape is not funny, but neither is all the other stuff people laugh at (like Holocaust jokes and mocking the handicapped) but I don't hear people starting an uproar over those jokes.

  • Simple: the person who objected wasn't in the Holocaust or any of those other "offended groups", but likely was (or was close to) a rape victim, so she took it personally.

The thing about comedians like DT is that EVERYTHING they say is in poor taste; that's their entire act. But there are always going to be people who don't get it, or think that they are special and deserve special treatment.

Comedians make racist jokes all the time, often aimed at ethnicities that I carry. Do I get offended? No, because I get that IT'S A JOKE. I don't walk around with a chip on my shoulder about my (various) ethnicities.

Most Holocaust victims likely don't go see tapings of Tosh, nor do many of his other "targets", and those that do are usually smart enough to know that their "group" may be targeted in one of his jokes, and again, they realize it's just a joke.

Further, there is another very old, very well-known tradition in comedy: heckling. This lady was a heckler, and EVERY comedian's job is to completely shut down hecklers, and they normally do so with "overwhelming force" because again, that's the tradition. By opening her mouth and inviting personal attention, she asked for an attack, and she got it.

Unfortunately, she obviously didn't know what she was getting herself into. She was in HIS theater, heckling HIM while he was working. That made her fair game in my book.

  • I get upset about rejection, but women laugh at me too

  • I personally am offended by the others you mentioned as well...

But to focus on rape jokes...

let's recap how the joke went down... Tosh was making a bunch of rape jokes and a woman yelled out "rape jokes are never funny" Tosh replied by saying "Wouldn't it be funny if that girl got raped by like five guys right now?"

You have to remember that when you make a rape joke, it is most likely going to be heard by a rape victim. I bet you anything that the woman that called out to Tosh knew someone who was a rape victim, if she wasn't one herself. Found the statistic that one in 6 women in America has been the attempted or complete victim of rape. So when Tosh made those jokes, how many women in the audience was he reminding of their horrible traumatic experience. They DON't need to be reminded of what happened to them, and have to sit there while a bunch of meatheads laugh about it. When comedians joke about rape, it implies to the public that the behavior is acceptable, when it should be seen as a horrible and inexcusable act. Just think about how you would feel if you had been raped.. sitting in that audience with people around you laughing about it...

    • The Holocaust, The Handicapped, Amputees, and people who have experienced Child abuse. They have been mocked not only by Daniel Tosh, but Family Guy, SOUTHPARK, and American Dad. Do I hear an uproar about that? No. Why is a rape victum in the audience of Daniel Tosh? He's been around for awhile, they should know his style of comedy. If they were dragged there by someone, that is their fault for not telling them. It's called Black Comedy, which has been around since Shakespear's time.

    • Well, I don't really know why you went on about the holocaust and handicapped jokes because I clearly mentioned that I find those jokes offensive too. You asked why people find rape jokes offensive .. So I aswered that... Being a comedian you're bound to offend people no doubt. And tosh doesn't seem to be having a problem with what he said based on his tweets. There are certain topics that just bottom line shouldn't be joked about in why mind. I like jokes where I can say "funny cause it's true"

    • That's my personal taste though. His comeback to the woman wasn't even creative or intelligent in my opinion. He could have handled it in a better way.

  • Well if you know the whole story he specifically said to a woman in the audience that it would be funny if SHE was raped. And I think it's also about the delivery, and people have started uproars about jokes like that...look at what happened to Michael Richard after his racist rant. You are also held more accountable once you have a t.v show, like Tracy Morgan, Daniel Tosh etc. both have TV shows with more importantly SPONSORS. So if people make enough of a stink sponsors are likely to pull out and the show may ultimately get cancelled.

    • I doubt that joke is going to get Tosh.0 cancelled. Southpark has crossed the line over and over and over, but that show is going to hit its second decade. And I haven't heard about Rush getting cancelled after that Slut joke.

    • My point was that when you are a comedian with a show you have more to loose...people get upset because A. you have more exposure so more people can listen to your jokes, and B. you are being sponsored. Getting your show cancelled is the ultimate end to the complaints I said it MAY happen, if it gets out of control. I don't know how Rush stays on the air tbh high ratings I guess among bigots I suppose.

  • well, if I guy chatted you up at a bar and started joking about rape, wouldn't you feel uncomfortable and creeped out, I think that's why people get outraged cause normal people don't go around thinking of fun things to say about something that serious

    • "normal people don't go around thinking of fun things to say about something that serious" Then why is South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, and Tosh.0 still on TV? They use Black Comedy: A type of comedy that makes things that you wouldn't usually laugh at funny.

    • Atleast south park and family guy has edgy jokes but I think non of they really jokes about rape

    • THEY DID! People just aren't whining about that crap. Watch Southpark: "The China Problem", "The Poor Kid", "It's a Jersey Thing". "The Return of Chef" Family Guy: Quagmire in the earlier episodes dragging unconscious women to his house. When Louis was trying to run for major, Joe threaten a rape victum that he'd drop the rape charge if she didn't vote for her. ... Think they don't joke about rape, now?
