Is it OK to Call a Woman a Prude?

So in today's society it is largely thought now that it is not OK to call a woman a slut just because she enjoys sex or has numerous sex partners. I agree with that, even if I do not like casual sex it is not hurting anyone for her do what she wants with her body. My issue is that I feel that people think that its OK to call a woman a prude if she is a virgin or more sexually reserved. I have heard this not just from teenage boys but from woman in their 20's speaking against slut-shaming. If I am being overly critical then let me know but I feel that prude-shaming, though not as common as slut-shaming, is still wrong. A woman should not be made to feel bad about her sexual choices be it she has sex with 100 people or no one ever. What do you think? Is it still OK to call a woman a prude?

  • "Slut" and "prude" are real words that have real meanings. Both words are mis-used a lot, but that doesn't mean that they don't have a proper usage, and it's not wrong to use them when it is appropriate.

"Slut" means a promiscuous girl or woman, and even more specifically, one who has sex with many partners and *with little regard to herself.*

"Prude" means a person who is ashamed to show their body in an even remotely sexual way, or who finds sex and sexual acts to be disgusting and shameful.

If those definitions apply to someone, then using the term is appropriate. The problem really comes when people mis-use those terms and broaden their meanings far beyond their correct definitions. I've heard people call a girl who has sex with her boyfriend a slut for doing so, when that is, by definition, a completely invalid use of the word. I've also heard many girls called a slut because of their dress, or body type, when neither of those things qualifies someone for that term.

Prude is much less used in general, and less often mis-used, but again, if the definition fits, then there's no reason not to use the word.

Just because someone isn't comfortable with a CORRECT description doesn't make the description wrong.

    • "n*****" and "f*****" are also real words with real definitions...but is it ever OK or accurate to describe black or gay people with these terms? of course not, you're overlooking the fact that these are not merely descriptive adjectives but more importantly terms of insult and hatred all designed to shame, belittle and insult people for being the way they are.

    • While you can argue that "slut" is usually a pejorative word, "prude" is NOT normally used that way, and in any case, neither word has anywhere near the social stigma of the words you used. Even so, many black and gay people use those terms and aren't offended by them. I get that words can be hurtful, but prude in particular is a word that has a specific, non-pejorative meaning and is used in lots of scientific texts. You're way out of the ballpark here.

    • You always seem to speak the truth:)

  • Well, its not wrong cause its legal, and they're just words.

But it is however a very ignorant thing to say about someone.

Slut if she f***s and Prude if she doesn't? wtf kind of way is that to think of women.

I wish people like this wouldn't get any attention from the opposite gender but sadly, these people are the majority still and so they have more people to choose from than we do.

Its coo tho, we're smarter so when the zombies arrive, they'll be the first to die and I'll clap.

    • Thank you, thank you very much.

    • When the zombies come, I will welcome our Zombie overlords with open arms. Therefore I will SURVIVE the Zombie Holocaust!

    • Good plan sir.

  • If the shoe fits. What else would you call it? I wish people would stop being so politically correct. Don't be mean and pick on someone because of it but at the same time there has to be a name for the action. The same goes for slut. I would consider a girl that has a lot of sex outside of a relationship a slut but I would never call her that to her face and considering her a slut doesn't come from a negative place, that's just what girls like that are called. Just like how you might call someone who is great at sports and fitness athletic.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't see it as a big deal

The only problem I have with it is the intent behind it. If you're calling a girl a prude to belittle her so you can feel better about yourself or if you call a girl a slut for some unknown reason when you don't know anything about her sexual history then that is ugly. But hey, that's the world we live in. Not everyone is going to be considerate of your feelings and they are going to continue judging.

  • I've been called a prude many times, just because I'm not as open about my sexuality. I'm more reserved, for me sex is a personal thing between the two people who are intimate. Of course I feel everyone is entitled to their beliefs and opinions on sex, some people are more comfortable talking about it and that's okay.

But I agree, some people like to call someone a prude. I've been called a prude because I don't talk about my sex life with my friends. The reason I don't is because they all talk to each other and have an opinion. I'd rather them not be involved in my relationships and sex life.

It does hurt when people call me a prude, because they use it as a put down to make me feel like there is something wrong with me, when I'm only trying to keep people out of my personal business.

  • This is an interesting question I hadn't really thought of things this way.

From reading people's answers I feel like clarifying. People are saying if someone does x and there is name for doing x then they deserve to get called that name. But the issue is about people feeling that X is a negative thing and that the person deserves the punishment of the name calling. I don't think Slut should really be a negative term after reading your comment neither should prude.

    • Yes this is true My Friend..I voted "C" but I think I got myself confused...I said I did not agree with the virgin definition of prude...but even if I think someone is a prude...does not make it alright to say that or call them that...I should have voted "B" ...NO

  • If she is she is. Just like if a slut is a slut. The word itself doesn't mean anything specifically bad or good. The context and the tone are what determine it. IF you're saying it as an insult either way, just stfu. If you're just being honest and saying what they are with no malice in your tone or context? Then that's fine. If they get butt hurt over it, their fault.

  • I don't like calling people names, even if its true. Just let others be what they want to be without judging them.

  • Both slut and prude are misogynist terms and should be avoided.

  • I think we could all be a little more careful about sticking labels (and especially derogatory labels) on individuals...however, I will still have my definition of a "prude" A prude, in my view, is not someone who waits for marriage and/or is choosy or severely limits the number of sexual partners they have...but rather what they will not do sexually with their lover/spouse...ie a person that would never do anything besides missionary-position-sex...or...sex for procreation only is going to be a prude in my eyes...(:(:(:

  • it isn't any nicer than slut but both words get thrown around

  • Kinda like saying " what a prudish slut?" Lmao no labels please. People are free to do as they choose sexually.

  • Yes it is. I don't see the problem with calling a woman a prude if she is one.

  • I don't think there are many girls around my age that I would consider prudes. Quite the opposite.

I don't care what a person is called. If they have that behavior, who cares if they get called out on it?

  • If it's "okay" to call a guy "cheap," then it's "okay" to call a girl a "prude."

    • I don't think it's OK to call a man cheap.

    • Well, send the memo to your sisters lol

    • Yeah for real!
