I'm in the same boat as your girlfriend. A lot of positions are painful to me, and sometimes I also wonder if it's normal. I can't tell you whether or not it is, but if she wants to be sure everything is in order she can visit a gynecologist.
Doggy style allows fairly deep penetration, and sometimes pressure on the back of the vagina can be painful, so one idea is to try shallower strokes. Another way you might be able to make it more comfortable for her is to try a different angle, either by tilting her hips differently or yours.
I don't like it that much because it hurts my cervix most of the time. For me at least, getting hit in the cervix is what I imagine it feels like for guys to get hit in the balls. It hurts very badly and even makes me nauseated sometimes.
When guys are in doggystyle position, they get deeper access and also tend to get all brutal with their thrusts. It takes some compromise to try to change the angle so it's not "balls deep" and also trying to use a little more self-control.

Oh ... and also, I read that the vagina can lengthen another inch or so when a woman is extremely turned on ... like close to orgasm turned on. I definitel can vouch that it's easier to do doggy when I'm very turned on or even immediately following an orgasm as long as he cums within a minute or 2. Even though she's slightly wet enough for you to penetrate without friction burns, it doesn't really indicate that she's properly aroused -- which comes more into play with deep pen
It isn't uncommon for doggy or any deep penetration position to hurt a female, we are only so deep and different angles can really compromise it, so try changing the angle you enter her by having her bend her legs more or less, try some slight variations, your legs between or her between yours, what ever is not your normal.
However if she finds it very painful than a trip to an OBGYN might be wise just to make sure everything OK on the inside.
Clearly, I'm not a girl but I have a little advice: make her come several times first and then in all likelihood, she won't find doggy so painful since the more aroused she is, the more elastic her vagina and the higher her pain threshold (because of the endorphins that release on orgasm). Putting her on top and letting her ride you like a horse (with a rocking motion) is the best way I've found for her to get her jollies.
Sex should feel GOOD. If you're hurting her (and not at her explicit request) you're doing it wrong. Don't jackhammer the poor girl's cervix just cause you're worked up. It's not nice.

i don't think it's specific to doggie style, if you do any position too rough or for too long it can hurt. Also doggie allows for deeper penetration, so maybe you need to get her more turned on/relaxed before you try that position. Otherwise back off on how rough you get. she probably would appreciate being able to walk the next day.
