Vaginal Discharge-is this normal?

I have an excessive amount of vaginal discharge. Like, it is worse than my period. it is not clumpy or anything but it almost has the consistency of hair gel. It's like a clear, light yellowish color. I have had oral sex but I have never had sexual intercourse. Plus, I have had this discharge problem before I even started oral sex. Sometimes it is so bad that I have to wear a pantyliner or else it feels like I have wet my pants. Also, sometimes it comes out really thick. I don't mean to sound gross but is it normal ot have this much discharge, and what is discharge for anyway?

  • Yeah... that sounds like fertile mucous. The color, consistency, and amount of discharge changes throughout your cycle. When your fertile it is clearish and stretchy. Kinda like a raw egg white. If you picked some up between your index finger and thumb, when you pull your fingers apart it'll stretch with your fingers at least an inch before breaking. At the other end of the spectrum, when you're on the complete opposite side of your cycle, your discharge will be thick and white and pasty/creamy.

What is discharge for? To keep your vagina from getting crusty, for one. Two, because that egg you drop needs something to float down on. And three, becomes those sperm need something to swim through.

    • I hate typos. You're* cycle... Because* those sperm... I probably shouldn't comment at 2:12 in the morning. Oh, for further information - the reason your discharge changes is to assist or deter sperm from reaching your fallopian tubes. The really thick discharge when you aren't fertile is difficult for them to swim through. The clear, stretchy discharge is easy for them to swim through.

    • wow that is really interesting! I had no idea!

    • I never seem to get the white pasty discharge, most of the time it is the clear stretchy kind. Is that an issue?

  • Vaginal discharge is perfectly normal. It is also different for every woman whether that's consistency, color, or amount.

Its basically a self cleansing system you have down there. You have good bacteria and you naturally cleanse the bad. So many things can change it too like hormones, menstrual cycle, diet, stress any medications and so on.

If you are worried about anything I would go and see a doctor because they can tell you for sure if there is anything wrong or abnormal. It is possible you could have a bacterial infection and maybe that has caused a change. A doctor could also give better advice for healthy ways to manage it if it really is interfering with life.

  • I do get quite a lot of discharge, and it's a horrible feeling so I really feel for you!

If it's that bad though, just have a word with your GP and they can check it's nothing serious, they may even suggest a way of reducing it.

  • i think you might have Urethritis is inflammation of the urethra. That's the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body.

Pain with urination is the main symptom of urethritis. Urethritis is commonly due to infection by bacteria. It can typically be cured with antibiotics. It is not an STI. You do get a lot of discharge from this. go to your local clinic or doctor, and they should give antibiotics to clear it up. It's very common among women, and it can be transferred through intercourse, if you do intend to have sex later on. don't worry, it is curable. but it does need treatment.

    • I had a bladder infection last year and I got that cleared up, so I know what that feels like

  • It could be,Thrush is a yeast infection, usually caused by a yeast-like fungus called Candida albicans.

Many women have Candida in their vagina without it causing any symptoms. Hormones in vaginal secretions and 'friendly' vaginal bacteria keep the fungus under control. Problems arise when the natural balance in the vagina is upset and Candida multiplies.

Vaginal thrush isn't a sexually transmitted infection but it can sometimes be passed on during sex. So, if you have thrush it's best to avoid having sex until you've completed a course of treatment and the infection has cleared up.
