Both, or rather, #1 causes #2 to be true.

Men are attracted to female curves (prominent breasts, wide hips) because they are signs of sexual maturity and the ability to bear children, which were vital to the survival of the species. Men who weren't attracted by these things generally didn't reproduce, and so their genes died out, while men who were attracted tended to have lots of children, and usually at least some of them lived long enough to reproduce themselves. That's simple Natural Selection at work.

And, so, naturally, those same characteristics became sexy and attractive to most men. On a daily basis, we've "forgotten" why, because modern medicine allows women who otherwise wouldn't be able to have children (women with small hips, older women, women with medical issues), so the ability to have children is no longer on the forefront of our minds like it was through most of history. Up until less than 100 years ago, those factors were a BIG DEAL when it came to relationships and marriages, and were routinely talked about.

In simpler times, a man's primary value in life came from his ability to provide for and protect his family and to generate wealth and status to pass down to his "heirs" (children). A woman's primary value was for sex and for bearing children, and while all women were assumed "capable" of having sex, not all were assumed to be capable of having kids. From the "Enlightenment" in the 1600s through 1900, more than 10% of all women died in childbirth, so that was a very, very REAL and legitimate concern (and prior to that, the rate was even higher). Today, that number is less than 0.1%, so we hardly think about it, which is why you are even asking this question.
