Why are people so embarrassed to get caught masturbating?

I am wondering why people get so embarrassed to be seen masturbating, what is the big deal everyone does it so why not enjoy it? Personally I don't care whether someone sees me doing it, and I find it more of a turn on, is this odd?

  • Because a large portion of society scorns it for a variety of reasons.

The religious part of society calls it a sin and actively instills shame into believers, so that when they get caught, they're ashamed to be seen doing something they think is wrong.

Other people may not think it's wrong, but still recognize that there's a large number of judgmental people and don't want to have to explain themselves to disapproving people. Judgmental people will often associate masturbation with promiscuity among females, which makes it doubly shameful for some women.

Getting caught by parents is embarrassing because of the incest taboo is so strong that simply discussing sex with parents is deeply embarrassing for many people, much less being caught in the act.

Many people view masturbation as a second rate substitute for sex, place a lot of self esteem and social status in sexual behavior, and believe that masturbation is something that only losers who can't get laid do. So they view getting caught as being find out to have less sexual prowess than they want people to believe. Obviously this one is predominantly a male reaction.

  • There are a few reasons. First is the cultural aspect of privacy; that by itself is both self-explanatory as well as axiomatic. The second is personal domain; just like you don't care quite a few people do care, and again it's axiomatic. A third would be sanitation; some people don't like thinking that they live within a room where ( esp. for dorms ) someone could be ejaculating or squirting or whatever all over the place and then just never clean it up. Catching someone in the act unless they are in a designated area could incorporate those uncomfortable thoughts; for instance if you were masturbating away from your bed just at the desk and a week later your roommate sees something kind of gooey on the side of the table. He's not going to be rational and think "Oh, that's clearly alfredo sauce from the pasta we had last night, haha!" Just an head's up.

  • Because it's a very intimate thing and personal act to do.

Some people feel uncomfortable with their own bodies,

so of course they will feel this way when someone walks in

    and "catches" them.

Also, some people want to be respectful because doing such a thing

    can leave others offended.

Just because everyone does it, doesn't make it okay to do have no

re-guards and do it in front of everyone.

I don't think it's odd that you find it a turn on.

Some people gain excitement by being watched.

That is probably more common than you think :)

    • *walks in on you* woops! sorry ;P

    • *Screams* AHHH! :-O

  • Lol I bet my masturbating face is funny as hell. So yeah that's what embarrassed me...

    • embarrassED? as in past tense? lol so its happened to you before? :P

    • No, my phone just decides what letter to change for...

  • For one , its personal, frown down upon in society, etc etc.

If you enjoy it if other people watching you, you might be an exhibitionist, not a negative thing, just a form of sexual language.

  • if a guy walked in on you it would be a turn on?

me personally just feel slightly embarassed that they would catch me doing a solo act...more the fact that they see how I'm doing it more than anything. I had roomies walk in once or twice and it was slightly embarassing not that I would keep any kind of secret that I masturbated it's just in that moment feeling a bit awkward...but I didn't stop, worry about being walked in on later, or feel embarassed when I saw the person later. It's just sort of a fleeting embarassment

but I think in general it is the taboo nature of sex and masturbation in general that causes the embarassment

    • I don't get turned on by other guys walking in on me but I am not going to stop doing it either. I think it is more of a turn on when a girl walks in on you doing it.

    • LOL!

  • I'm not and to prove it, I do it in public.

  • ummmmm. it's a bit personal and I am not comfrotable with any tom d*** and sally seeing my girlie bits.

  • its still very taboo in public

  • So you like getting caught jacking off? What if it was another guy who caught you?

    • hell I don't mind getting caught, but I don't go out of my way to do it, but if I was walked in on I am not going to stop.

    • What if it was a gay dude who walked in and he got turned on and whipped his out?

    • well at least I wouldn't be doint it alone and I don't think it would go further then just jerking off, its no different then having a circle jerk.

    • Show All
  • I am not. I've been caught a lot and they actually really don't even care.
