Many guys can't seem to get through their head that length only applies to logistical considerations, the angles you can achieve penetration from. You'll hear people say "the average vagina is only 4 inches deep" and you'll hear retorts like "the vagina stretches to fit any length". None of that matters for a couple reasons.
1) Women who have smaller size preferences tend to have smaller GIRTH preferences. Typically this is the case with girls who have less experience with penetration and haven't yet trained their vaginas to stretch. Other women simply have naturally narrow vaginas that don't stretch easily, or they have other medical issues that make it difficult for their muscles to relax. Whatever the reason, these women find THICK penises painful so they prefer thinner ones.
2) The bulk of sensation in the vagina comes from the first 2 or 3 inches of the vaginal canal. Hitting deep in the vagina can give a sense of fullness that some women like, but more often than not bottoming out and hitting the cervix is painful for women, and guys with long dicks will often find themselves being asked not to go all the way in (a fence post doesn't need to go all the way into the posthole to do its job, right?). So a short, thick penis can stimulate the important bits just as well as a long, thick penis if you can control your thrusts well enough so that it doesn't constantly slip out.
3) Most women don't particularly care about penises when you really get them to talk about it. They like the guy that's attached to the penis. They don't think about dicks, they don't really like looking at them. Most importantly, the massive majority of women can't orgasm from them, so from a woman's perspective a penis isn't much use if she's not trying to get knocked up. If you can eat pussy like a starving man eating at a Las Vegas buffet, your girl will be over the moon and won't even give a second thought to the size of your dick.

Four inches is TINY. A girl in a committed relationship is definitely going to learn to accommodate your less-than-stellar size, but I think only a very tight girl would actually "prefer" it. Honestly, if a guy I was having a one-night stand with dropped his pants, and it was that size, it would be a bit of a disappointment. But I wouldn't rule him out altogether. At least I don't think so. My ideal size is somewhere between the 6.5 to 8 range, if I have to be completely honest.

A small penis can work, but a bigger penis was always better for me. I am a real fan of the guys with long fat flaccid penises where when it is hard it doesn't grow all that much larger.
