What do forehead kisses mean?

My boyfriend often kisses me on the forehead/top of my head, especially when we're laying in bed together cuddling or talking. I've always taken it as a sign of affection, but I know many people tend to think of it as a sign of friendship, or a sign of affection you'd give to your mom or someone of equal romantic desire. To guys, when you give a girl a kiss on the forehead what do you mean by it/what's going through your head?
