Trump card: Why the Donald is the choice of many

For those of us who are paying attention to the 2016 presidential election, you know that a major, unprecedented wild card has be thrown into the race. A businessmen turned author turned TV star is once again reinventing himself and attempting to become the leader of the free world. His name? Donald Trump.

Before I go on, I want to make clear that this is by no means an endorsement of Mr. Trump. I am simply going to explain why a significant portion of the American population would favor such an unfiltered, scattered candidate over all the other options.

1. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU GET

With Donald Trump, people know what they are going to receive, for the most part. He's not afraid to "say it like it is", and more. He can get away with saying things other people couldn't in the minds of many because he is a breath of fresh air, and while they may not agree with his comments about illegal migrants or POWs, they are willing to overlook them because they recognize that is a trade-off of having such a bold candidate that they feel will bring America back to its former glory. Additionally, they feel some of his comments help combat the "politically-correct" rhetoric that has been damaging robust debate in this country.

2. DÉJÀ VU

Adding fuel to the fire is the prospect of face off in the general election that sounds like one that could have happened 20 years ago: Bush versus Clinton. To many, who regard Bush's presidency a disgrace and are opposed to another member of the scandal-ridden Clinton family, this is unattractive.

3. HE'S REALLY RICH

Finally, while some may view wealth as a deterrent in their electoral decisions, Donald Trump has turned his $9 billion fortune into an immense political asset. In his announcement of candidacy, he touted, "I'm really rich!". Trump not only used his financial success as proof of his management skills (and a sharp contrast to the current government, which is $17 trillion in debt), but also a method to eliminate the influence of wealthy donors upon his presidency, should he win. Trump is one of the few people on this planet who can afford to self-finance a presidential campaign. This is attractive to many who are concerned about the role of wealthy donors in presidential decisions.

Unfortunately, however, Donald Trump clearly is not a capable leader. He goes too far in his comments, and has not proven himself. Hopefully, other politicians are able to learn from his candidacy and take the positive elements of it, while leaving the bad.
