"Society did it!"

You guessed it folks, this myTake is all about the meaning given to the word "society". I'm sure you've heard all about how horrible society is, right? I mean, it must be a pretty aweful thing if so many people blame it for so much! Society has to be something that is feared if it is really this terrible... Right? Wrong.

I honestly HATE it when people blame "society" for things. Guys, we are society! A society is literally just a group of people living together in a community. When you turn around and blame everything on society, then you're all together blaming yourself and those around you. I understand the use of society in certains ituations, but it's way overused.

I was talking about how I wanted to lose weight. I am around 100 pounds overweight (for my age and height). I told a friend I was going to trya nd lose a few pounds, and his response bothered me. "You shouldn't feel the need to lose any weight! You're fine!" I explained that I understand I am fine, but I was unhealthy. His next response was the worst. "You're FINE! You don't need to lose weight! You're only unhealthy by society's standards!" No, actually I am deemed unhealthy by a health professional, who is actually paid to help me better my personal health. His next answer was," But the doctors are just working to scare you into being skinny like everyone else, for society's standards!" I appreciated the fact that he wanted to build my confidence, but blaming society and trying to talk me OUT of becoming healthy? That's not even cool.

I get that society is just an easier word to describe the trouble making media industry, but media is not society. We are society. I hear "emo/scene" kids (nothing against them, this is just a good example I've noticed) complaining about how society doesn't accept their hair color or piercings. I've had purple, pink, blue, and black hair before, and not a single person told me it was wrong or bad. I lived in the exact same location as these people who were complaining, and I knew the exact same people. So why are they complaining, if no one has actually told them they look bad with colored hair or facial piercings? Because they read in an aticle somewhere that is was unattractive to have unnatural colored hair and piercings. That is a media influence, it is not society!

I've also noticed how people like to bring up "society" in arguments. I have a friend who always does that. He's basically a conspiracy theorist focused on his imaginary "society"! We were talking about animal cruelty, and he brought up how "society" makes everyone afraid to share posts about cruelty! Now where in the world does society fit into why we still have animal cruelty? My neighbors, friends, and family so not abuse animals. So why are you claiming that all of society is to blame? This situation was actually more about individuals that a society as a whole. After his comments about "society" scaring people away from discussing the cruelty, I completely gave up on the argument.

Yes, society is exposed to the media, definitely! But everyone is exposed to different things and I have seen very few people actually become influenced in their views because some news artice or television show said something. It's very possible that this happens, but it wouldn't be our society as a whole that is affected. As stated before, I'm overweight with an incredibly low self image, and I've never once blamed society for making me self conscious. People, please try and find different words to use than "society". Say that media over does the beauty image. Say anything besides that "society" is to blame. I've seen society, and my society is actually alright.

This is completely opinion based. If you are a person who uses the term society often, i do not mean offense. I am simply stating my view on the word and hidden meaning behind it, as well as pointing out that it is totally acceptable in certain situations, it just shouldn't be blamed for silly things where blame is not due.
