Why Must I Also Turn Vegetarian?

why MUST I also turn vegetarian?

Not actually a vegetarian or anything, just needed to put a picture.

It bugs me everytime a vegetarian tries to assert their vegetarianism on others by saying we are not meant to eat meat. The simple truth of the matter is that what we were "meant" to do is actually of little relevance right now (not like we know for sure what we were meant to do and not meant to). Let's discuss a few things.

1. So you can accept everything else that evolution has brought us and then go on to speculate that "we are not meant to do __________". If we follow that logic, then we are not meant to be bipedal either, living in buildings, conversing in languages, and so many other things. If your defence is what we were supposed to do, then some theories will have us still living in the seas.

2. If you are going to say that animals feel pain and so we are not supposed to kill them then you will have to demand every other species on earth turn vegetarian, and don't say we are not animals, or "other animals do (insert something generally unacceptable), should we also do that?" Pure truth is that we are also just another species on earth and in the basest form of it, animals. Every species has similarities and differences to other species so that defence is just quack.

3. Morality is the only true reason or defence to vegetarianism: "I don't like causing pain to other sentient beings so I'll become vegetarian," fine, but morality is subjective and you have no right to impose yours on others. Nothing is intrinsically wrong or evil. Humans don't kill humans not because there's a rule book that says it's wrong but because we have evolved as a species, due to our dependence on each other, to protect and not harm each other. Maybe one day scientists will prove that plants are actually sentient, and not like the way we think of them right now, but actually sentient. Then what should we do, eat air?

Why Must I Also Turn Vegetarian?

If you ask me to not eat meat because the meat industry is, to a larger extent, savage and environmentally unfriendly, now that makes sense. However, even that still gives you no right to demand it. Also, there are farmers and farms that do these in way more environmentally friendly, and apparently sometimes positive ways, so it's not like the only possible impact on the environment is negative. I can eat meat without worrying you about any negative footprints.

Bottomline
I don't support animal cruelty or hunting, if you're going to eat something to survive, do, but don't be an arse about it. However, if you demand I convert because we are not meant to be meat eaters or because animals also feel pain, try again. Humans may evolve to stop eating meat because we don't like causing pain to other animals but even that will still only be a matter of our moral acceptances changing not because we found the holy grail or the rules of the universe.

P.S. Notice the punching bag is probably really far fetched, it's just to make a point. Also, religion is another reason why people can decide their diets. The number of religions we have should already tell you that this is also not a constant among humans.
