6 Things Europe Does Better Than the U.S.A.

Yes I know the USA is one country and Europe is a Continent made up of other countries. Still each European country still has some common ground on the things that they do in everyday life. Which frankly they do it better than us Americans. So here is a list of things that America seriously needs to start doing as well.

MEASUREMENTS

I know by now all Europeans will agree that it's annoying how they keep having to convert centimeters to feet and everything else in the metric system. Which Americans are also tired of being the only ones using the Imperial system. The only reason why we haven't changed it is because our government is LAZY! Thinking it's too much work to change that which honestly I think it's a sad excuse and they need to just hurry up and change it. Plus the Imperial system makes it harder to measure anything and makes things more complicated than it needs to be.

False prices

America is horrible when it comes to having your normal price on an item and then having to figure out what the sales tax would be on it. Which if you're like me and suck at math, you're basically guessing at how much it might be. Which with the most expensive, it's harder to guess at what the end value will be. In Europe they don't have that illogical crap and what price you see is what price you will have to pay no matter what.

Tipping

This one really annoys me in the USA since why do we think this is acceptable? We're not your employer so why do we have to make up for your shitty pay check? We never tip any other kind of jobs and nobody is complaining about that. Plus how annoying is it when you have a waiter that comes around every 3 minutes to ask how you're doing when you're in the middle of talking about something important? Then get hate from a waitress/waiter if you don't tip because you don't have enough cash to even tip. FOR THE LOVE OF BOOBS STOP TIP SHAMING!

Which Europeans are smart enough to not have to tip their waiters and waitresses. Which I think she should do like the Europeans and not have to tip at all.

Health care

If you ever check out the health care that Europeans get, you will question why the USA has such a shitty one. Europe has about 4 or more countries that rank in the top 10 best health care. The usa is ranked 46th! Their health care is a lot more efficient than ours and which is why so many Americans can not get help with health problems. It's because majority of us just can not afford it and nor does it cover what we need. Which this is also part of the reason why Americans life expectancy is a lot lower than majority of European countries.

Banning harmful chemicals

This is the main thing that I think is the reason why Europe is over all healthier than the USA. Since the USA doesn't ban most harmful chemicals and just waves it in our face to use and consume. Europe has banned around/over 1,000 harmful chemicals and the USA has only banned around 300-500. This is seriously sad and explains why Americans have a lot of health issues.

Vacation Time

If you look at the countries with the best vacation times, they're all European. Which is probably why Europeans don't seem to be as stressed or unhappy as Americans. There is a legal obligation for European countries having to pay for their vacation times. In the USA companies aren't legally obligated to do it at all. Plus Europeans get more vacation time than the USA as well.

All of those things really grind my gears that we do in the USA. I hope the ending doesn't sound to horribly cut off, my focus/concentration level depleted after that. XD Anyways this is my #SeeMyWork, muahahahaha! Tell me what else we do in the USA that Europe does better. :)

we dont tip that much though, but we do it. and we do it not only at restaurants but also at small bakeries, supermarkets, basically everywhere if we dont want the cents. some stores even have that kind of charity thing where they donate these extra cents.

Thoughts on the 6:

1. Measurement: These things ARE cultural. For example, even if the UK went "officially" metric, they still use terms like miles and terms like "Stone" (= 14 pounds), which even Americans don't use. Oddly enough, the USA was among the first to have metric money, at a time when other nations had pence, shillings, doubloons, and pieces of eight.

2. This is a consequence of federalism. States and localities have their own sales tax rates, which vary. There are many benefits to federalism, like local financial control, that offset inconveniences like the sales tax variances.

3. Better servers get rewarded more---who knew? Maybe you are happy with apathetic service, but I am not. And the tips are still voluntary! Get some backbone!

4. As your populations become more "diverse" and less homogeneous, your health care costs will go up too. And being put on waiting lists and shuffled off to NHS hopsitals is no fun. Everyone who *can* afford private hospitals over there, goes there. "If you think health care is expensive *now*, just you wait until it is "Free"..." Meanwhile, the Europeans today use what? American vaccines, American medical devices, American surgical procedures, pioneered guess where?

5. We assume grown ups are smart enough to read the warning labels and use chemicals properly, rather than be nanny stated. I have used "harmful" weed killers in my yard with the proper gear and clothing, and "harmful" insecticides to deal with roaches in my home without having to call the exterminators, again with the proper protective gear. We are a land of DIY (do it yourself), and we are independent and not herd people.

6. And who pays for that vacation time? In the form of high unemployment, the Europeans do. They regularly tolerate levels of unemployment that would cause electoral revolts in the USA. And good luck expecting a shrinking proportion of young to keep paying those benefits for a growing proportion of old. Chain letters all fail over time.

With your point 5 we can't do it ourselves because a good amount of the chemicals are in everything basically. So what are we going to starve just because everything has some bad chemical in it? Stop washing our hair because all the shampoo have harmful stuff in it? Plus they're McDonalds is healthier than ours.

and while we may have a stone age way of thinking which is quiet apparent from how everyone is explaining in the thread it can be said that we have yet to bend to anyone because we dont follow crowds we make them.

The first three are just different systems, if you don't like it for whatever reason that's fine, simply a difference of opinion.

The fourth one is questionable at best, quality of healthcare is ranked in part by "accessibility", which is what really drags the US system down. If someone goes to the hospital in the US and somebody else goes to a hospital in Europe, both patients have the same problem and nothing else wrong with them, the patient in the US will receive the same or better quality of care as the patient in Europe, the difference is in how payment is made. In Europe, everybody pays A LOT more money in taxes to maintain such a system, whereas in the US people only pay as needed and out of pocket. Many American politicians have pushed this false narrative that if you don't have health insurance in the US, you cannot get healthcare, this is not true but unfortunately a lot of people believe it.

The fifth one ties into the 4th one. Americans lead a fast-paced lifestyle that demands food be available on the go, this sacrifices a healthy diet for being able to keep up with the American lifestyle. It further drags us down on quality of healthcare too because even the best system can only do so much in this regard.

Lastly, vacation time varies greatly depending on who you work for, at my job you get six weeks of vacation every year once you meet a certain criteria, some places you only get two weeks every year.

In reality these points are small fries though, Europe is collapsing and Europeans are demanding their leaders do more of what got them into the mess in the first place, it will be fun to watch the place implode.

False prices
It's not false, it's just the tax isn't included. This is because different states have different tax percentages. The only thing I don't understand is why stores don't put the tax included prince next to the whole allow price. I'm all fairness, though, if you suck at math and get more than 5 items, regardless of whether or not you include the tax, you aren't gonna know how much the total price is anyways

Tipping
I agree. But too bad we live in a society where companies take away from their workers just to keep profit margins so they can keep their private yachts. I don't know why no one just makes a law banning that shit

Health care
I'm not for universal healthcare, but I'm not gonna get into the economics of it. What needs to change is getting rid of for profit 3rd party intermediaries... Aka, insurance companies. All we need is a bank account and a financial advisor. Cuts down prices significantly, saves the average American at least double and way less money wasted. But it's a secret the government or insurance agencies don't wanna hear

Yeah. But at the same time, if you wanna put that shit in your body, that's on you. Like, my Italian friends actually thought McDonald's and shit like that were part of our daily diet, so they are it every day (or every other day) and got sick. I just told them they are retarded 😂

The price is still false because what is written as the price isn't what it comes out as when you check out thanks to the tax. Why not include the tax with the price instead of putting only what your paying the store and not what you will have to truly pay.

The reason why they don't include it also has to do with tax skimming or some shit. I read about it a whole ago cause companies were doing that and the state governments couldn't track it. Each state's sales tax is different. That's the point. In new jersey, for example, it's 7%. In south Carolina, it's 1%. Delaware doesn't have sales tax altogether. They aren't selling at the state price. Like I explained, there are accounting problems that stem from it. both from a governmental point of view and company point of view that will affect the customer. Yeah. It's anywhere between 0-9%. But most states are pretty standard. Like, if the sales tax is 6% in LA, then its gonna be 6% in san Francisco. Actually Farenheit is a better system then celsius, it has a better range more precise (or so they say) and was based upon alcohol not waters freezing point hence 32 degrees being waters freezing point not 0. The other measurments are pretty outdated however. Tipping occured thanks to the temperence movement and banning of liquer, since this hit sales of restraunts they took it out of the checks of the workers who where then forced to accept tips for better service to get by which then spiraled out of control to what we have now. In short, yeah its stupid. Our health care system has many issues however if you look at the places that have good health care they also pay for it, its not free. So that would then lead to other issues ie they may have better healthcare but how is quality of living for the lowest class since they would be just as affected by the taxes as others despite needing that money? I would guess their is a trade off for it. Though we do need to fix our system and badly. Personally I think removal of insurance and extreme limitations on pharmacutical companies would help a lot.

Pharmacutacle companies where forced to give a discount to hospitals for certain drugs (I believe primarily cancer ones) in order to reduce the cost to the patient (their are cancer drugs that cost 130,000 dollars, for month supply). So naturally what happened was the hopsital gets the discount and then. . . the price stayed exactly the same. The hospital found a new way to make money so they did. Currently with medicaid and things like that hospitals will actually put in for tests for patients that the person doesn't need (especially the elderly who are essentially wards of the state and are barely clinging to life) so that they can charge the governement ie taxpayers extra money just so the hospital makes more income all at the tax payers expense. By trying to socialize it your just causing more problems and more room for beurocracy (which costs us money) and more exploitation (wich costs us money) which is never good for any one except the companies.

In the U. S. although imperial system is more common, most Americans will use both depending on the size. Americans won't use cm to explain how tall they are however they will use cm in other form of measurements. Same thing with oz and liters. You will see both measurements on items that are sold by the volume and the more common one is on top.. For example. I have a 20 oz bottle of pop and below that it states 591 mL. On a 1.25 liter pop it states liters first since that is what most Americans use once the volume gets to that size and below it it has 1.32 qts.

I like to think of this as being bi-lingual in terms of measurements. What puzzles me are the countries that use stones for weight instead of lbs or kg.

As for the Month, Day, Year. With how Americans write it down, they are basically saying the same thing as Year, Month, Day. How do I come to this conclusion. Today would be written as June 17th, 2016. The comma after 17th and before 2016 indicates that 2016 comes first (2016 June 17th). Since months and days are used far more commonly than the year, the month and day staying in the same order gets put in front of the year. Much like how a persons name may be John Doe, but when categorized it would be written as Doe, John

It's also quicker to say June 17th than to say 17th of June.

I can understand the false prices but at the same time it's letting the customer know the exact price because not everything is taxed. So you get to know how much something cost and then how much you are paying for tax. What gets me is buying an item that cost $9.99 with no tax. Why can't they just make it an even 10. I know it's a psychological marketing ploy to get a customer to buy the item (s) but I still think that's ridiculous.

To be fair on the tipping... it is perfectly legal to never leave a tip, however, there is a tip shaming that happens in America for those that are lousy tippers or don't tip at all.

Measurements I will give you.

False prices though is off. In my state there is no state sales tax. There are taxes on lodging (the way to tax out of staters) and some communities have local sales taxes. There are gas and cigarette taxes, but the stated price includes those.

Tipping. During my travels through Europe, tipping was expected everywhere I went. It has been a while. Maybe that has changed. Heck, just to go to the bathroom you had to tip for soap and a towel in some places.

Healthcare I agree with you. I loved the episode of Network on TV that was a rant about how America was NOT really better, listing our standing in many things including health care. Here, insurance is being forced on us. But before, if you could not afford the treatment, you had to get worse till you were about to die, and then go to the hospital. Totally screwed up!

Many points. 1. Measurements: the US was one of the first to adopt the international agrrement on SI units in 1977. They only forgot to put it into national law. 2+3 Prices and tipping: yes, a final price when you buy or eat something is more easy. In Europe you can still tip, but its more free and an real appreciation of the service you got. 4. Health care: you are correct its better, but it costs you a lot of tax money. So its a choice. If you are rich, no problem for the US system, if you are poor: don't live in the US. 5. Harmful chemicals: yes in the EU it is far more strict, but also on other regulations. Its very difficult to strt up things becauqse you are bound by many regulations. So there is a plus and a minus part. 6. Vacation time: yes, I love it, but again, you pay for it via the consumer prices. Somebody has to pay for your free time.

False prices? So you don't realise how much you're being taxed when it's included in the price tag. Do you know why this is? Because each jurisdiction can set its own tax rate. Do you usually try to pay in exact change for everything you buy?

Tipping - it's a cultural thing, it is unfortunate and steps are slowly being made to get rid of it. The counterpoint is how terrible customer service can often be in Europe.

Um, the UK uses a mix of both systems but in the vast majority of cases we use metric. The only things that are still imperial are distances, given in miles, people's heights and weights, given in feet, inches and stone (Except in all official documents which are metric) and milk and beer still being sold in pints. The vast majority of things are metric. School maths lessons only involve metric units, aside from that one lesson we had in Year 7 to teach us Imperial units should we encounter them. I'm British and the Fahrenheit scale is gibberish to me. As are basically all imperial units except feet, inches and miles. I have no idea how much a gallon is, but I know how much a litre is. I have no idea how much a pound is but I know how much a kilogram is.

What is going to happen to metrication in the UK now that you're leaving the EU? A lot of things were being built to European standards or planned ahead to conversion later, such as almost all railways (light rail or heavy) being built using metric as opposed to the old system of chainage.

"Should you encounter them"? They are in colloquial use everywhere, defending the archaic use of 'stones' in the same statement as you defend how metric the UK has become is laughable, especially when followed by a declaration that you've no idea how much a pound weighs.

You use a mix insomuch as you use whichever one suits you at the time. This is why there was all the outcry about beer being sold in 'schooners' in favour of pints because in some cases, tradition trumps progress.

Europe also does tea and cheese better too, as for the tipping, you dont have to tip, the reason i tip is if they have done a exemplary job and kept my tea glass filled and we're extra friendly and kind, because they could have easily acted like a complete knob like most do but decided otherwise, plus i like helping others out

Yeah I won't deny it. The false prices one is probably the one that annoys me the most. For once I just want to pay what the price tag says and not have to bring an extra ten dollars in case of sales tax. Also I only tip if the waiter/waitress does their job right, but I don't know why my parents will tip people with the crappiest attitudes towards their customers.

The idea of tipping at sit-down restaurants 15-20% is something that I never really understood.

I live in the USA, and in California all servers must be paid minimum wage. So when I tip it is a few dollars, not 15-20%. I tip at most 10%.
