There are many reasons why you should consider adoption, rather than buying a pet.

Reasons Why You Should Adopt—Not Buy—A Pet! 🐶🐱

When hunting for a new friend, many people buy, rather than going to the animal shelter to make a selection. They don't consider how many animals are still on the waiting list for a forever home. Many animals are put down because they never find a home, or they stay in the shelter for the rest of their lives. When you adopt, you are doing an amazing thing.

I volunteer at an animal shelter, and it's sad to see so many perfectly happy, healthy furry friends who are overlooked. They deserve homes just as any other dog or cat does. So many pets deserve loving homes.

If the fact that what you're doing is amazing isn't enough to persuade you, here are nine more reasons why should consider adopting.

You're saving a life

First and foremost, you are saving the life of that animal. That animal you adopt is 1 in 2.7 million animals that have found their way into an animal shelter. They have came from all walks of life. They could have been abused, lost and never found again, unwanted and abandoned. Due to overcrowding in many community shelters, many of the animals that come in are literally put on death row and euthanized because of lack of space. You are doing him or her a favor by getting them out of an environment where they could die any day now. Be proud.

It's much cheaper, and will save you money

As you may know, it can cost thousands upon thousands of dollars to adopt a purebred dog or cat straight from a breeder. When you adopt a pet, you have to pay a small adoption fee, and the cost usually depends on the pet's age. Since I was adopting an older cat, my adoption fees were fairly low. Yeah, you have to pay a little something to keep the shelter running, but it's much easier to pay that vs. thousands of dollars for a pure, bloodline yorkie or something. Plus, they already have their medical needs taken care of. It's a win-win!

Overpopulation

There are simply not enough homes for all of the puppies and kittens that are born every year, and many of them end up homeless and in shelters, or even dead. When you adopt, you are breaking the content cycle of puppies and kittens being born and ending up homeless. It's better for them to end up with humans caring for them then on the street.

You're not supporting puppy mills and irresponsible breeding

I don't want to paint all of these "backyard breeders" in a bad light, as many of them do actually treat their puppies and kittens well but..many animals, especially dogs, in pet stores come from breeders and puppy mills, people who don't really care about the animals and just want to make a quick buck. You usually see these "factory-style breeders" online or in newspaper ads like Pennysavers. Often they are sold to unsuspecting costumers through pet stores as well. The conditions of puppy mills are horrible: female dogs are impregnated again and again throughout her life time and rarely have human companionship, while millions of puppies are produced every year.

These puppies are then put in the same condition as their mothers: tight, horrible confinements where the bottom of their wire cage hurts their paws. They usually never see sunlight. Their health and well-being is usually horrible because these horrible people don't provide them with proper medical care because they are super greedy, and only care about money. When these puppies aren't adopted, they are either killed because they were never sold, abandoned, or sold in auction. Don't support these facilities and adopt your pets.

Most adult animals are already trained

Many people go after young animals such as puppies and kittens because they are cute and they want the experience of raising a baby animal. While this is all fine and dandy, and many shelters do have puppies and kittens, you shouldn't leave adult animals out of the mix so quickly. Many adult animals are already housebroken and socialized, so you don't have to go through the trouble of training them. Also, many senior dogs and cats are often looked over due to the fact that they aren't young anymore. Consider adopting one of these sweet pets, and don't automatically cancel them out when making a selection. It was a pleasant surprise to know that I didn't have to train my yorkie to pee outside when I got him.

Keep in mind that many adult dogs or cats can be aggressive, but many of these animals are held in shelters, and are not put for adoption so quickly. This could be from a number of reasons: The animals where abused when young, or the owners were careless when socializing them around other dogs, animals, and people. Be wary, and do your research when purchasing a pet of this nature.

Your pet has already received medical care

Another obvious benefit of adopting is the fact that when you pay that adoption fee, that covers the medical care costs too that the shelter has provided you with. Your new friend has probably already been spayed or neutered, and has had a checkup and all of his or her shots. Again, it is much cheaper than paying upwards of $500 for a dog, then after a few days, having to take them to the veterinarian where they will probably charge you much more than the combined cost that the shelter offers. Saving money is always good.

You have many animals to choose from

Shelters have a wide selection to choose from. They have anywhere from bargain purebreds, to happy healthy mutts. From old animals, to newborns. Sometimes, you'll even find animals like rabbits, birds, or even ferrets and chinchillas that people have dropped off there. Every time you go there, there is a surprise. You won't always see the same thing!

Bragging rights

When your friends ask where you got you're new best friend, you can proudly say you adopted, then your friends may even consider adopting a dog. Countless times people have asked where I got Luca, my adopted dog from, and I say I adopted. It's a good way to get people aware about the benefits of adopting! People love seeing him posted on my social media.

You made the entire world of that animal

When you adopt, you make that animal happy. While he or she is getting a new human friend, you get a new friend as well. Both of you win!
