Social Skills Part 2 : Here’s How People Really Judge You

You may not realize it, but people always judge and assess each other unconsciously. The problem is that when you don’t have good social skills, it’s hard and confusing what criteria people use to evaluate you, and that’s a bit annoying because you find yourself giving a completely wrong impression.

Knowing how people judge you gives you an advantage in terms of how you want to be perceived. That is especially true for situations where your image can get you the outcome that you want.

The purpose of this article is not for you to change yourself in any superficial manner to get validation from others. It’s meant to show you how people really assess and evaluate each other, including you.

1. Looks

I think that’s the most obvious one of them all, people judge you by the way you look. The first thing someone notices about you is your appearance, not your intelligence, not your personality, but your external image. People use it to determine whether you’re rich, poor, calm, anxious, angry…..etc. The point is that the first impression that you give comes from how you look, and others often use it as a first indicator to determine what type of person you are.

2. Body language

Did you know that your body can communicate how you feel ? Your posture, the amount of eye contact you make, and how much space you take can be subtle cues for others to know how you’re feeling. This is also used to judge someone’s emotional state. Generally speaking, standing tall with an open body language, that means uncrossed arms and legs, and taking a bit of space signals confidence and self-assurance. Whereas having a more closed body language, and taking small space indicates that you’re not confident, that you’re someone who’s not sure of himself.
Eye contact is also important. Poor eye contact is perceived as shyness or lack of confidence, whereas maintaining a good amount of it signals confidence.

3. Social status

Simply put, what job you have, and how much money you make from it. This one’s interesting because the way people treat you can totally change once they realize that you have a high social status, in other words, you’re rich and powerful. People treat the ones with a high position a lot better than someone who’s average, and I’m sure you’ve seen it before.

4. Social conformity

This simply translates into one question : Are you similar to most people ? If yes, then you’ll be seen as someone who’s ‘normal’. If not, then people will automatically label you as being ‘weird’ or subtly reject you. This is because people are conditioned to reject anyone who’s different than the majority, we’ve talked about it in part 1, remember ?

5. Your overall behaviour

The effect of your behavior depends on the type of person that you’re interacting with. The way you talk, what you talk about, and when you talk about it, your reaction to various situations, all of these factors will shape your image and how others perceive you.

These are the main factors that people use unconsciously to evaluate someone. The good news is that when you know this stuff, you can control how you’re perceived by others when you need to, but doing it all the time will only lead you to create a fake version of yourself.
