You Can't Take Our Statue Down!

...somewhere in the land of Houston, TX, there, in what is arguably the cornerstone of the cities major metropolitan park, Hermann Park, stands the proud statue of Sam Houston, who is considered the father of Texas. The city is quite literally named after the former president of the Republic of Texas, and yet...somewhere on the web, with all of the recent announcements and actions to remove various other statues that seem to honor and glorify a racist south, the confederacy, and/or slave ownership, a Texas group called Texas Antifa, posted on their Facebook page, that the statue would soon be removed and that they had reached out to the Mayor, who is a Black Democrat, who according to this group, had taken on their cause.

And thus, people went nuts. Sam Houston? Why the hell would you remove him of all people? As one poster writes: "Yes, Houston owned slaves. But during his tenure as a Texas Senator, he voted against the spread of slavery into new states repeatedly. His refusal to join the secessionist movement and swear allegiance to the Confederacy cost Houston the Texas Governorship. Thanks to his loyalty to preserving the Union, Houston was kicked out of office and replaced by the pro-Confederacy Lieutenant Governor."

And then what happened? Well on the alleged date of it's removal, various other groups holding confederate flags and chanting about how they love how Confederate Sam Houston was (irony, irony, irony) came out to "peacefully" protest with their guns (what do guns have to do with this, anybody? anybody?) and flags and posted up chanting about how no one is going to take their beloved statue. This made a lot of park goers extremely uncomfortable because a lot of families frequent this park, and guns outside of those held by police officers, are not something that is seen with any type of regularity at this park, but if you don't know, it is legal to carry a registered gun in Texas outside of certain restricted buildings/areas. And the actual mayor...well, when asked about the alleged removal of Sam Houston, he replied: "it was not on his agenda and he hadn't given it any thought.

But let's talk facts:

Absolutely no one has actually petitioned to have the statue taken down.

Not blacks or other minority groups, not the black mayor, not the liberals, not the city, no one! That's ironic enough, but the fact that those coming out in support of the statue and doing interviews literally have no knowledge of what Sam Houston did or was actually about, just makes it all that much better in the stupidity dome because they're on tv yelling about their love of the confederacy and guns and preserving their confederate history, when this is a man who fought against that.

Trolled again people. You want to talk about making a mountain out of nothing, well, this is it. You want to talk about people just jumping on the bandwagon, not doing a drop of research, well, this is definitely that. And by the way, there are actual other statues not too far from this one that do indeed honor the Confederacy, but let's not actually make what this was supposed to be about, actually about that. Oh boy, the stupidity level. The city has since come out and said, look people, calm down, no one is taking old Sam down here or at Sam Houston State where there is a 67 or so foot statue of the man, so they can protest peacefully if they want (under heavy police guard), but this is a non-issue.
