In Some Places, Women Are Still Treated as Property, Here in the USA

Places like Hooter degrade all of us. And it's not just in hidden corners in the far countryside. Business people go there to confab; they are 'respectable.'

The other day, a friend took me to Hooters; I went once years ago out of curiosity but I would never have gone back myself.

The girls are pretty much treated like slaves; They have no right to object to the behavior of the clients. Sure, they are relatively well paid, but no one would voluntarily work in such an atmosphere.

Constant pawing and leering and suggestive comments...truly awful.

And there are many such places. Most are not well known chain places, but imitation Hooters are everywhere.

Then there are the go go dancer bars, the 'masage' parlors...mostly young girls who don't know how to assert or defend themselves, and in practice the owners of these places push the girls into prostitution, however much they deny it. The women are watched to see how many clients they attract, and are told to 'be acccommodating' to the rich nes.

It was a shock to see so many children there. The effect of the atmosphere on the children is hard to measure but predictable. They will grow up with very little respect for women, and not so much for themselves given the behavior that inevitably occurs.

I Have issues with respect for wome myself, and I had a beer or two during my visit. I know one of the women at this particular place, and I swatted her behind and chucked her chin...I lapsed quickly into bad habits that I have struggled with for years and partially overcome. Put her colleague on my knee..

She told me later she was beyond furious, but she can't get mad at customers; she'd be fired immediately. Of course as a friend, she is willing to discuss what happened, after several days of silence after angry texts.

But my immature and irresponsible behavior is not the issue here. A culture that allows such places to flourish is never going to be one where men and women get along well. To say the least. And their ubiquitous presence these days, as a business venue particularly, testifies to how abusive our culture is for BOTH men and women.

Going there after so many years was a shock and reminder.. One reason I detest our modern feminists is that they don't care about the working women who are more or less forced into taking these jobs. They address only elite corporate power women..and you see a few of those at places like Hooters quite often. Whereas you won't see me there....except, so far, twice, once to see one of the employees that is a neighbor and (I think) still a friend.

If anything those women themselves are to blame because they make it acceptable by actually working there and accepting the treatment. Women allow themselves to be treated as objects. Kinda hard to change the mindset when there's women clearly enjoying it and motivating that sort of behavior and then usually they are the ones who cry that they can't get decent men. LOL>

Even when there are opportunities that would seem obvious to someone disconnected from that part of society, those women in the thick of it have never been made aware of them. They were never taught there is other stuff out there. Even if that was part of their public school curriculum or common knowledge among others, they had already been very mentally shut down by the way they have been treated, and do not absorb the knowledge.

I live in Nevada so I am pretty laid back about work considered degrading like prostitution or in this case, Hooters. It must be nice to be able to "just quit" when you don't like your job. I am a CNA. It is a hard job. You have to be both physically and mentally strong to get through the work week. On my first day at a nursing home, I cried with a resident. I deal with a variety of patients. The worst I've had, was patients hitting on and flirting with me. I just awkwardly look away. I know a CNA that accidentally got a patient the wrong flavor of soda her patient wanted. Her patient was so mad, he took the soda can still filled with soda and threw it at her. It hit her in the forehead and gave her a good sized bump. An incident report was filled out because other workers need to know what this patient has done in the past and that he is violent. She didn't walk out and quit she has bills to pay. I am never going to quit no matter how my patients treat me. I love Nursing so much that I don't see myself doing anything else. I am extremely grateful for this job. Not online do I love it, but it pays well in my state. But even if I hated it, leaving isn't an option.

I've been to Hooters a number of times, and there were no guys groping the servers. The servers were friendly but professional, and so were the customers. And there are plenty of women and often kids there. It's not a strip club.

But women are FAR from the only ones working crappy jobs. Who cries for plumbers and sewer workers who literally work digging ditches and working on pipes full of shit? For that matter, who cries for a lot of construction workers? Ever seen what a roofer has to do, and often in extreme weather (heat, especially)?

How many women are miners? Have any idea what that work involves?

And many of them are in similarly difficult situations where quitting isn't a simple option, given that often the people in the worst jobs are the newbies making the least money.

Having worked some messed-up jobs myself, I struggle to be overly concerned for waitresses who were making quadruple my pay to wait tables and occasionally have to deal with a crappy customer (something waitresses in OTHER restaurants deal with on occasion as well). I'm not justifying that behavior, but when you compare that to some of the things men have to do for a living... well, there isn't much comparison. Few Hooters waitresses have died in their early 40s from black lung...

Dude, you're describing just about every single job that has workers interacting with the public/clients. The law firm I work at runs all lines through a recording system that also snags certain keywords automatically for review. If you're not extra polite enough, you get in trouble. One angry defendant wanted something done that would result in our client causing us a bad financial blow--the managing attorney himself came out to politely kiss her ass and try to explain why we couldn't do that. It was sad.

You know why there are girls working at Hooters? Because they chose, and choose, to work there. There's lots of serving jobs. Girls decide to work at Hooters or Twin Peaks or Tilted Kilt. If they don't like it, they could easily go get jobs at a HUGE amount of places that are hiring low skilled teens/20 somethings.

See, you're a more conservative, traditional fellow, who was taught women are somewhere above men and somewhere below angels. So you see bad female choices and you rationalize it as men causing it. Except you're deluding yourself. Women are there at Hooters because they chose, and choose to remain in a job where they earn their keep showing their tits and ass off. That's life. Is this like a US thing, that you can't object if a customer is nasty? Where I live you have every right to throw out a customer, refuse service or to even call guards to come escort them out if the customer is being degrading/aggressive/offensive. In most companies here, the well-being of the worker is often put first, and workers are encouraged to do the things I mentioned above if a customer is misbehaving. Do you just condone whatever behavior in the US as long as the customer's behavior isn't directly threatening your safety/the safety of other customers?

Most places if the customer is nasty to a clerk or whomever is dealing with the client/customer/member etc. the best option is to get management of some sort to deal with the situation, and unless the customer is doing something illegal management and definitely upper management will do everything to bend over backwards for the customer. Hell, one of my old jobs working as a clerk in a supermarket, if a customer was upset with the way a person was doing their job, management would give them a $25 store credit to get them to A) Shut up and B) Make them happy.

There was one lady that was complaining that we didn't have a type of bread that she wanted. It just wasn't something we carried. The manager that dealt with the situation just told the lady that there's nothing that can be done if we don't carry the item. When the manager reported the incident to upper management they yelled at the manager for not giving the customer a $25 card for in store credit.

They must literally apply to this job and if it's a Hooters job, it is absolutely no secret what they will have to wear, and the atmosphere they are walking into. It's been talked about for years. Hooters, as far as I know, does not hire minors, so these are grown women who can make the decision for themselves to walk away from those jobs. I've never been to a town or city where a Hooters was the only job available in the whole entire town or city.

I don't think it is inherently misogynistic for women to sell their sexuality for money. In a sense actresses and models are doing this because they get paid for looking good. The problem is with respecting these women as people and not treating them like objects.

The girls wind up with the tips, minus what they share with the cooks and busboys. Management is not entitled to tip money. I would hardly call Hooters, or even an American strip club, sex slavery or anything remotely close to it. In other places there may be a lot of abuse ( but even there, not at Hooters - I saw one in Chengdu! ) but almost all of it in the US is in the ILLEGAL sex trade. No one is forced to work at a Nevada brothel.

That's why I've never been to that type of places like Hooters, Strip Clubs, and shit like that, and don't really have any interest in going there, because there's no respect given or demanded, and it truly makes me uncomfortable, cause it's wrong.

I don't know where you live but in the majority of US prostitution isn't legal so they're not going to be soliciting sex is the open. Generally they hide through other services or use code words to hide it.

What I mean... is majority of jobs you go through these things, it's regardless of where you work. Heck, some women use these tactics to get promotions, holidays, extra pay, gifts.

Yeah I do get your point. They're more forward with what the situation is rather than trying to manipulate you. I kind of hate the service industry for this.

I think some manipulation is alright. Like being kind and nice to a customer even if you hate them. There's definitely a line though.

I don't think this is always a gendered issue though men also sell sexuality in the service industry.

@Caaarl I haven't really seen men manipulate to the extent women go, but I agree both genders do it. But its something I really hate about my gender, as I'm very tired of dealing with the manipulation tactics.
