What does a "deep" eye contact with a girl actually mean?

Hi,
I'm not so good at interpreting body language or female signals so that's why I'm asking this here.Sorry for having such a long story and so many details, but my friendships are at stake here. Here is my situation:

About a month ago, I met a girl (and eventually her boyfriend) through our mutual friends.
Our group of friends has been doing different group activities lately, at which she took part , sometimes by herself and sometimes with her boyfriend.
She often argues with her boyfriend, and even get close to a fight ( he gets drunk and gets agressive toward everybody ).

Now here comes the other half: ever since we met, as we talked and shared opinions and toughts (from food to even sex/porn) we seem to be VERY alike, as in almost identical. If a friend would make a joke, we both would interpret it in a "naughty" way, and she would look at me and smile knowing I tought of the same thing.

Whenever our group is together, regardless if her boyfriend is present or not, as long as she is not in his arms, I often "feel" her looking at me (at my head more precisely, waiting for my eyes), and if I would turn my head or eyes towards her I find her making "deep" eye contact with me, as if I would be a creature she has never seen before and her sole purpose is to understand what I am.

Althought I am the one to look away first, most of the time she would continue for a few more seconds.

How should I interpret this? I don't want her to get the wrong idea.I have and always will put my friendship on first place.I have a strict rule as to not hit on/make a move on girls that are already in a relationship, regardless if we are friends or not.
