Thanks guys! :)
Is DD really the average bra size?
Thanks guys! :)
In pre-1950s sizing you chose a letter (A-D) based on how large you felt your breasts were. When bras started being made using modern sizing most companies and stores did not switch over to sizing and fitting people using modern standards because it was easier to sell them bras in the sizes they were familiar with.
As the decades passed it has become more apparent that trying to continue to force all women into such a small range of sizes wasn't working so they have started slowly increasing the cups and adding Ds to the slightly larger sizes. That's why most people believe that DD and up is really huge. It literally used to be the largest cup sizes available.
In modern sizing though, D simply means that a person has a 4 inch difference between their bust and underbust. These are people that have a 4 inch difference and you can see that it isn't very large at all: www.brabandproject.com/.../search I have average sized boobs and I have a 7-8 inch difference: https://imgur.com/a/m71Li
Bottom line is that it's cheaper for companies and stores to carry a smaller range of sizes so they would rather convince women that they only need that small range than actually manufacture and stock a modern range. I recommend using UK sizing and sticking to UK brands for bras because they make a large range of bras, usually up to K the 15th cup letter, for most sizes.
Yes the average size is DD but so many women wear the wrong size, the true average size is probably something completely different. I have a small skinny frame, I weigh a hundred pounds and have double DDs they are large. I measure myself all the time to make sure I am wearing the right size because a good bra and the right size makes a huge difference. I also had horrific back pains @asker I recommend a good sports bra and yoga. It's been a lot better but I can't lie don't on hard surfaces or else it makes my chest hurt.
Considering the rate of obesity in the US, that really isn't surprising. Also, over the past couple of generations as there has been more hormones in our water supply, girls have been developing earlier and larger. Add in how many get implants and, yeah, it's believable that DD is average size...
I've checked a few British studies on that topic and it and found out that the average bra size is varying depending on where you live and/or grew up.
Those studies found that women in Inverness and Wigan are buying the biggest bras - on average a huge 36F - followed by Liverpool (34E), Leeds (34DD) and Newcastle (34D). In London, by comparison, it’s a 32C, while in Portsmouth and Welsh town Merthyr Tydfil the average size sold is a 34A. And in Brighton the average is only a 32B.
And there are also variations between the nations of the UK with Scots on average wearing 34DD bras, Welsh women have the smallest average cup size at 34B, and English and Irish women both on average 34C.
But to answer your question: yes, it seems that DD is the average in the US from what I've read.
The DD is now the norm for three reasons.
First and most importantly, U. S. bra sizes were set more than 60 years ago, when women's average age at onset of puberty was 16 instead of 11. The earlier onset is due to improved healthcare and overall health and nutrition. The earlier onset gives the breasts more time to grow, so they are bigger.
Secondly, women are fatter nowadays than they were 60 years ago. More fat, more breast tissue, better breasts.
Thirdly, the demographics have changed. the women for whom the bras were originally designed were white. The demographics have changed the average.

DD is the average in america. whether it's believable or not that is what the studies say
i do wonder if the increase in obesity would sort of lend to part (if not all) of the increase in average breast size, since when people gain weight their boobs often get bigger as well
yeah i agree on the obesity part because most americans are fat
@GnarCute implants play a part. as does weight gain. but the studies suggest that women are actually just better educated about proper bra size... so apparently women had been wearing bras too small for them for a long time. another factor is that for a long time only smaller cup sized bras were given fancy design and what not. now that more designers are making better styles of large cup bras women feel more inclined to buy them
Not to make you feel bad about yourself lol but I'm pretty sure a DD is considered very large in the US. I think average is at a C, but I guess that's really not based on anything other than experience and seeing my friends lol. I'm sure like 80% of women are wearing misfitted bras lol, me included.
This average bra size in the US is 34DD. And like the Asker said, most people have a misconception about how "big" a D cup really is, especially guys. And yes, many women are wearing the wrong bra.

@CheerGirl38139 dang that's crazy to me lol. Thanks for providing sources!
I wonder though.. Americans are infamous for being overweight.. thoughts on whether or not that has to do with anything?
Yeah, if you read the articles, part of it is that Americans are (in general) heavier than previous generations. And we all know that boobs is one of the primary areas that weight gain typically goes to. LOL.
it's bc there are so many fat ass woman. over 3/4 of the population of woman wears the wrong bra size.
measure yourself. 1st measure around your torso right under you breast.
ex: I measure 32 in
next measure around your entire breast.
ex I measure 35 in
1 inch diff is a
2 in diff = b
3 in = c
4 = d
5 = dd
and so on. inches is the measurement around below so I am a 32c
I came across this statistic
A 2013 survey from lingerie retailer Intimacy revealed the average bra size in America is 34DD — a leap from the average 34B it was 20 years earlier. There are several reasons as to why, including inflated cup sizes, plastic surgery, and the rising obesity rate. After all, breasts are largely made up of fatty tissue, meaning the more fat a person has, the bigger the breasts.
yeah i do think so, it's the average bra size but not the average CORRECT bra size lol. i know i'm wearing the wrong bra size for sure, but 30C isn't easily found
As someone with an A cup (which can sometimes even be too big rip), I have a hard time buying this :')
DD isn't average!! C is average (at least where I live). I was also wearing the wrong size for a long time. I would always buy 85B but I'm 85C. (European size). Most females wear the wrong size.
34DD is the U. S. average.
@CheerGirl38139 I don't know how much that is, I'll have to Google it. Give me a minute, woman.
Here you go.

And you're right, many women are wearing the wrong bra. But people also have a huge misconception that a D cup is by default, "huge". It depends on her frame.
@CheerGirl38139 Google confused me even more. Finding the right size is so hard, I was looking through a chart and it's fucked up.
There are some good YouTube videos on how to measure the correct way.
@CheerGirl38139 I think it depends on the brand too tho.
Well yeah. Of course
its the average size for girls in rich areas because FAKE BOOBIESSSSS
In America it might be, but because of plastic surgeries and excess weight, not because of natural endowment...
I think that must be cos Americans are bigger. In UK it's a C cup.
The average u. s. woman, statistically, is 5'4" and weighs just under 170 lbs.
Yeah, she has pretty big breasts.
Don't know but a girl told me D and above is considered as big
Though I don't care
Boobs are boobs 😍
Wow... as a guy, this Quick Guide is like learning a language to me xD
I'm a 30 E, but I want a reduction cause it kills my back...
Maybe when you include older heavier women it is. I mean, what woman in her 60s isn't at least a D due to weight gain? For younger thinner women it is probably a C cup.
most women in the US are fat. Boobs get smaller as you lose weight.
I m a 34 F
Yes. I'm a 30DD and am not huge.
Meh.. doesn't matter, Boobies!
Due to overweight it is.
