I was told many years ago that it was a stylistic representation of the actual physical shape of the Ottoman Empire, reaching from the Balkans, through the Middle East, and into North Africa.
The guy who told me that clearly wasn't as good at geography as he thought he was at obscure 'facts'. If this were true, the crescent would face the other way, like it does from the *back* of the flag, not the front.
What @turkishdelight says strikes me as much more likely.
i always saw it as a crescent moon and it is based on the Ottoman Empire's flag which was based on a dream by the Ottoman leader Osman who say a crescent moon in some dream.
but it definitely could be seen as an eclipse
thanks for MHO
I'm Turkish I will explain. It has a story.
The red represents the blood of the dead heros.
And the star and the moon... After the Kosovo War where Ottomans beaten their enemies, 2nd Murad sees the moon and the star next to each other on a lake of blood, and decides to make it our flags design. This is a legend.
I always thought it was cool-looking and solar eclipse. I'm going to ask Turkish friends later. Never thought about it! (☆

A moon (crescent) and a star. Because of their divine personifications. Ottoman's/Osman I's view. But I may be wrong. Haven't read that much into it beyond that.
Solar eclipse. The Turkish flag is red too and the Sun is a star.
A half eaten kebab probably.
