Religion is a really bizarre aspect of our race. There are probably thousands of reasons why people believe in religions, but for the most part I think it's a source of an answer to the unknown. Most of us have at one point, or do constantly (I am one of the latter), wonder about what really the purpose of life is. If you look at animals, and nature in general, it's really eat, sleep, reproduce, rinse, repeat. If you start thinking about that, it really can send some people over the edge to the point where they NEED there to be something greater, and they NEED to have a purpose. Realistically, we could not exist, and everything else in the larger view would be the same. All the planets, galaxies, and the universe would still exist in it's same form, more-or-less.
Personally, I think the only use of religions is starting wars. It's hard for me to not believe in something bigger (how the hell do we get something from nothing, like our Universe?), but I really can't believe that the creation of these bibles are 100% truth. Can we really assume that no one exaggerated or elaborated their story to make them seem like a larger part of some supernatural experience?
The big bang theory strikes me as interesting, but just as unsubstantiated as religions. Two particles collide, and BANG! we have a universe? What were those two particles originally? How does a universe start? What starts it? Where do the original materials come from? It really hurt my brain to think that the universe was probably ALWAYS here. Think about that; there was no beginning to the universe... How is that possible? Everything we know here on Earth states that something has to begin somewhere at sometime with something.
This fact alone I'm sure is a great foundation to create a religion. People want these answers. I want these answers. However, for me, religion isn't the answer I'm looking for, therefor I choose not to follow that path.
Could there be something bigger than our universe? Sure, and it's easier on my brain to think that there is. Could the movie Men in Black actually be right, and our Universe be in a marble? Sure, why not? We don't actually know which religion or theory, if any, are historically correct. Who are we to say that any of the Historians, Scientists, or religious leaders are incorrect? We don't know anything. And it's extraordinarily arrogant to assume you are "obviously" correct, and that what someone else does is a waste of time. However, this is hard to avoid, and I find myself being the arrogant asshole I was just berating.
Believe what you believe because it makes you happy, makes life bearable, answers the unknown, or even just to help you believe that there are actually some things out of your control.
Live and let live. The more happy people, the better; even if it is thanks to a bunch of good stories in a book.

Well For thoses who want to think maybe there is something greater then me, Its a lot easier to blame something that no one sees, hears but feels ... Its like God is real as long as someone in this world thinks he is.
I found that a lot of fears went away when I believed in life after death, I found comfort in the fact Something in this world cares about me ... I found comfort knowing Death is not end ... Its the fact I will see my best friend who died when he was 10, because he was under the age of accountability. ( Age 12) and its all that stuff.
Its the fact most chirstian churchs teach good values to have, you know don;t steal, don;t kill Share peace not hate ... To Be a better person ...
As for me and Religion ... I have totally lost all hope in it, I mean I don;t think I came from a monkey, So I belive in some higher being, but thinking it cares what I do with my life, is where I get iffy at.
Plus Its like the whole time your walking a narrow line between good and bad, Oh I thought a sexual thought I am going to hell... Oh no, I did not do enough to help that person ... I am going to hell... O no I said F*** ... Going to hell... I Hate someone ... oops going to hell ... I just got sick of hearing how I was condemning myself to a fire pit of pain and despair ... Because of the little things I did ... I live with a man Who THINKS HE TALKS TO GOD... Like How two people will talk ... Yeah that's MY Dad ... They crazy guy talking to himself ... So I have heard him say alot, god has told him I am going to hell... and That if you see a sexual thing on the TV, You had a lustful thought , Lust is a sin, the price of Sin is DEATH. OMG I f***ing hated that sh*t ...
But basically from what I have seen ( Sorry for my rant) It gives peopel a safe place to go when life is f***ing them in the Arse, when they made a mistake and need some thing to turn to, When they need the peace of knowing Its not MY Fault its the devils , or whatever the bad thing is ... Oh I drink Because the devil has his demons on me, they make me ... If I pray for him to cast off these demons I will not beat my wife every night ... Its that kinda of sh*t ... Its knowing Well my dad died from a horrible car crash at the age of 45, but if I am good person and I believe in god and his son, I will see my dead father again... Or child ... Its a Great Coping thing. Plus its away for people to meet other people.
Like I believe in god, and that he had a son, but I don;t think he really cares any more abotu humans or one person can change the whole , I don;t see that as the truth.
Because they find comfort in the structure religion gives them. Not everyone can handle living a life without rules and guidelines - with religion you have someone telling you what to think and why. It frees your mind up to worry about important things like what hat to wear with what dress and who's going to win the Super Bowl.
Seriously, some people just need to know there is a reason for living. And it gives them hope that after this life there is something more. It gives meaning to the nonsense of life.
As an Agnostic myself, I do find that at times I envy the faith of a religious person. To be so sure that there is meaning in chaos can be a great comfort at times.
Some people believe in religion, you believe in what George Carlin says.

George Carlin is the greatest. People waste their time on religion because they are idiots and or weak, simple as that.
