How much does popularity matter in dating? Does it ever get better?

I like this boy named Ben, I know for certain he liked me in 7th grade, but I don't know about now. We didn't go out in 7th grade because I was dating his friend. It didn't last long with his friend because he let the fact that he was popular and I wasn't get to his head and he ignored me around some of his friends. That was so stupid, if I dated this guy would it be the same way? Why does popularity have to matter so much?!

To clarify: I am now 16 but I dated his friend in 7th grade, which was when I was sure he liked me.

well, that's middle school for ya. I'm in eigth grade and feel your pain. Lucky me, my neighborhood has a bunch of nice guys so I have like a bunch of brothers plus my extremely nice boyfriend who knows a lot about me. Thing is, in middle school, no matter how much guys say they do, they don't care about your feelings unless you've been at a friendly talking level for at least two or three years already, or you've known them for a long time and know a lot about them. The only reason most people go out is becuase they think it's cool. And popularity, ya, it was bad in seventh grade, but just as sixth is a big leap to seventh. Eight is a BIG leap FROM seventh. You'll see, people mature little by little. I can tell you are pretty mature for your age, so am i, it kinda sucks being the smart, responsible one.

yes, it does get better! I wasn't all that popular through middle school, and my first couple years of high school. after that though, it seems to sort of even itself out. I guess people's maturity levels have improved enough to accept more kinds of people as friends. and in college popularity is virtually nonexistant. no worries.

it really doesn't matter as much once you get into highschool.

Don't even bother with him, he isn't mature enough to have a relationship.

Find someone who wants and likes you just the way you are, "popular" or not.
