Is having an interest in anime a turn off?

I was just wondering this, but would any of you feel turned off or annoyed if you were dating someone who had an interest in anime(Japanese cartoons)? And I'm not talking about the ones who obsess over it and talk about nothing else and it's their entire life to the point you can't hold a conversation without it involving anime; just an interest, like watching it occasionally or drawing it? And to those who are into anime, how would you feel if you were blown off because of this?

If you're still in middle school there shouldn't be a problem.

But if you're in high school... that could be a different story. If you grow up with something and like to delve into it from time to time, that's completely understandable. But if anime is a current and ongoing interest, I would view it as a mark of stunted intellectual development. I've been told some of the stories are quite involving, but that could be said of most forms and explorations of media.

At the end of the day, the human brain and mind are GIGO systems - what Goes In, Goes Out. So be careful what information you feed yourself and always keep an eye on the person you'd like to grow to be in the future.

I know what your saying. Some of the kids at my school who watch anime can be a bit...childish at times, not saying that all anime fans are like that though, but the ones that do give it a bad rap. However I just enjoy drawing it and watching it from time to time,so its not an obsession. the only real impact that is has had on my life is that it made me have a yearning for learning, speaking, and understanding foreign languages of all kinds and gave me an even greater passion for art.

How is it a mark of stunted intellectual development? In all seriousness, there are animes out there that are far more clever than most TV shows being aired. I'm extremely smart and graduating in the top of my class from college in the fall. And I have an interest in anime, as well as books and film.

I applaud your using anime as a step toward self-improvement and I do consider anime/manga to be a valid art-form. That being said, and given that all art is a reflection of the culture that develops it, I'm curious about your thoughts on the idealization of the human form in anime and what it says about our culture.

thank you, and that's a very good question, but I'm not exactly sure how to answer it. In my opinion I think anime was a way to express human emotion. I know that the facial structure and emotions are very overexagerated, but to me it just shows humans to be very expressive and emotional creatures, which we are. Also, I'm not really sure how to explain it, but there's just something about it that makes it visually appeling to the eye(or to MY eye at least) hope I could answer your question...^^;

Definitely not. In my eyes it's a very positive thing. It shows that you're an open person and that you don't quit just because the majority doesn't think the same way as you.

In general I think that people who dislike anime, either haven't seen any, or have seen something childish. I'm sure there's a right anime for eveybody :)

I'm watch anime once in a while, and I recently rejected a girl because of her hostile thoughts towards anime without ever having seen it and being unwilling to even spend 10 minutes to give it a try.

guy who are so into anime.. like they're those hardcore anime fans who have so much anime comics, dolls, everything.. is a really really big turn off to me.

No, if anything, being able to draw it is pretty damn awesome, unique ability. Everyone has their own likes, so long as they don't try to force them on others, or, like you said, talk about it obsessively, there oughta be no problem.

The way I see it is... hey we all have hobbies I wouldn't stop liking a girl because of her interests. I've actually watched anime here and there so it isn't a big deal to me.
