Long story, but I want to give enough detail for everyone to understand my situation:
About 2 years ago I began law school. I moved from the MidWest to the East Coast (USA). It was huge transition for me, but I got into an exception law program. It was impossible to turn down.
I met my girlfriend, Emily, about 6 months before moving to school. She is my best friend and we are very serious. I have one more year of school left. I plan moving back home and we will live together and start our live together.
We are doing the long distance thing because we both ended up starting law school -- on opposite sides of the country -- at the same time. We will both we graduating Summer 2014. Long distance is hard, but we have made it work.
When I first moved out to school, Emily flew out and visited me for about a 2 week period (I started before her). She knew I liked animals so we both decided to adopt a cat. Of course this was my cat and lived with me at school, but Emily contributed to vet bills and other necessities. She seemed to like my cat very much.
Recently, probably 6 months ago, she just started disliking my cat. My cat never scratcher her, hissed at her -- she did nothing wrong. My cat is nothing but sweet and affectionate and I can't honestly figure out why Emily loved my cat, got the cat with me, gave me money for food and litter and now hates my cat.
We have been discussing plans when I move back and Emily says if we want to stay together I have to give up the cat. I can't find out a reason and whenever I ask she just says she hates the cat, it's annoying, etc. I honestly, think Emily is jealous that I give my cat attention sometimes and Emily doesn't get 100% of my attention. It seems ridiculous considering 95% of my free time is with my girlfriend.
I'm not a crazy cat guy, but I feel sick to my stomach giving up a cat that I raised for the past 2 years just because my girlfriend is jealous or whatever. Apparently she doesn't like living with cats. My girlfriend has a dog (she adopted it before she met me) and I would never think of asking her to give up the dog. I do love my girlfriend, but I think this is super unfair and I'd feel upset getting rid of my cat.

Just to be clear. I've been with my girl for 2.5 years...I've had my cat for 2 years...we got the cat when we were together. I did not have the cat before I met her.
