In your opinion, does sexism still exist in America today?

I am asking this because I have recently seen a lot of debates about men vs. woman and especially regarding feminism. A lot of people say that feminism isn't necessary anymore because the sexes are now equal while others argue that feminism or, in some cases, men's activism is still needed.

So, my questions are...

-Does sexism still exist in America?

-If yes, which do you think is more of a problem, sexism towards men or sexism towards women?

-Do you think the sexes are considered equal by society?

-Is feminism still needed or are men's rights activists needed?

What is your opinion?

I know I mentioned feminism as an example but when I say "sexism" I am referring to it BOTH ways. Towards men or towards women, whichever you think either occurs more often or is currently a problem.

I'm leaving this question somewhat open ended so feel free to add any thoughts you like regarding this issue :)

Yes there is no doubt about it.

The problem is men's rights are not seen as important, by both men and women. By men I mean other then complaining they take no active steps. The problem is feminism still makes men to be the enemy, are belligerent towards men, its men at fault, misogyny is used as blank statement engulfing all men. Dare to talk against feminism or criticize feminism, you are labeled as women hater, misogynist, sexist pig. You dare talk about men's rights again same response from feminists. So its OK to talk about women' issues but not men?

In contrast men do talk about women's issues, I do, I know many others who do. Men have sisters, cousins, mothers, friends, daughters, nieces so they do care. But we are berated for not wanting to affiliate with feminism, and we are automatically called misogynist by feminists, and automatically excluded from daring to speak for women's issues, as if feminists have monopoly over women's issues.

So problem men have is not women's issues but feminism. They are passionate too. That's why men take humanist approach, that we should fight for equality for both sexes, both and women.

Men:

- Still only men have to register for draft, in Norway which pride themselves on equality only men have to enlist in mandatory service.

- Only men have to approach when it comes to dating

- Men still can't be only stay at home dads, taking sole role of a care taker. As it is considered feminine and predominately still women don't want men to.

- Men are still discriminated against when it comes to child custody. They are still forced to pay alimony and can lose half their belongings.

- Affirmative action, even when men disproportionately apply, quota has to be met for women, discriminating against men.

-Women only need a vagina to be feminine, while men must conform to many other society's norms to be considered masculine, and called things like p*ssy, wimp (feminist raised this as an issue)

- Men getting raped or facing domestic violence still has stigma, and can even face ridicule, same with men facing sexual harassment.

Women:

- Women still get blamed for rape, she was drunk or the clothes she was wearing. Women still face sexual harassment.

- Women still face domestic violence or threat of violence.

- Women's reproductive rights; society, government still holding to notion they control women's uterus's.

- Women still lack behind in science, technology, sports.

- Women are sill under represented in politics, as CEOs, in the corporate world.

- Women still face glass ceiling.

- Women are still less likely to be hired, and paid less.

- Human/sex trafficking, women are disproportionately forced into sexual slavery and prostitution.

- In the media women have to be young and look good, so their looks being important not intellect.

Just some of the things I could think off :)

And just because like most men I may not affiliate with feminism, doesn't mean I don't passionately care about women's rights :)

Other - it still exists to some extent and always will, but it is on both sides. The fact is that men are generally victims of sex-based discrimination more than women today. Women are just so conditioned to believe they are victims that they don't even see the reality of the day. Any challenge they face must be sexism...

The important thing is that the playing field is level and has been for many years. Except for some fields like construction, oil field work, military, etc., where men will (and should) always have an advantage, women have all the same opportunities men do, and that is protected BY LAW.

It is true that women, on average, still earn less than men. But that is NOT due to discrimination / sexism. It is due to the different life choices men and women make. Feminists need to stop claiming otherwise because they only come off as whiners. The time for that is long gone.

The time has come for women to stop bitching and start owning their sh*t. The longer feminists continue to whine, and other women don't stand up and call BS on them, the more women lose respect in the eyes of society. That just perpetuates sexism rather than extinguishing it.

Here's the thing there's a lot differences between men and women so its going to result in double standards. That's just life. I wish both genders would just start dealing with it even it is a bit sexist to just deal with it.

It affects both genders, but I think it affects women more prominently.
Definitely not.
Feminism is to advocate equality, not make women superior to men. Therefore, men activists should technically not be necessary, especially if people stop associating feminazis with feminists.

Yes sexism definitely exists. It exists towards BOTH genders. However, it doesn't necessarily exist in the way some people think. Some people think women are still treated unfairly like with job pay, those people who focus on the 77 cents to a man's dollar ignore that statistic ignored EVERY possible variable to account for the difference. Those things like amount of hours worked in a week, the type of jobs between the genders (men tend to take more hazardous jobs thus getting hazards pay and they also take more tech jobs which offer better money where as women take more service jobs), they also ignore the amount of vacation time between the two, and (most important imo) they ignore the differences in how much they negotiate for a higher pay (men are 8 times more likely to negotiate for a higher pay and do so FAR more frequently). So in that aspect, there's no real sexism, just a difference in how the sexes approach work and what type of job is ideal. That's not anything more than the INDIVIDUAL'S choice to pursue the specific type of job or how long they work or how much they ask for a raise. And even if they do find a boss is treating the men better than women even though all other variables are the same, then it's in that person's interest to take legal actions because it is illegal already.

Now, where is there sexism? The expectations that women can't be aggressive (That's part of what accounts to issues like negotiation) or assertive because it's not "feminine" to do so. That's bullsh*t. But that's slowly changing. Where there's also bullsh*t sexism is in the rape cases... men are too easily getting off of charges when they legitimately should be punished. There's too much blaming of women for drinking or dressing a specific way when it's not even remotely close to being their fault in the majority. Maybe partially for drinking or so, but even then, it's so insignificant a blame it's not fair to put ANY focus on the victim for the vile act those scumbag rapists did.

Where else is there sexism? Well, there's a lot against men. In regards to child custody battles, men are treated unfairly. In regards to alimony and divorce, men are treated unfairly. In the dating world as a whole, men are still expected to do ALL the initiation. We're still expected to pay for at least the first date. Too many girls have a princess mentality and it's really f***ing frustrating.

So ya, there's sexism. it's a problem. There's sexism towards BOTH genders and in all countries of the world.

Sexism is still a problem in north America. With women it's a little more subtle for the most part, but it's still there. Plus there are obviously still places where it's still blatant, but the more blatant one is about sexism toward women, the more likely there'll be some heat, which is why a lot of it is smaller or more subtle. Still there, though. Problem with it though is that also gets swept under teh rug, or met with a knee-jerk "fuck you feminiazis" reaction. Yes, there are some bad feminists who take things too far, but that's hardly all of them.

With men on the other hand, sexism toward men can be just about as blatant and out there as possible, and nobody will make a stink. If someone does, people generally sweep it under the rug, or try to shut down whoever brings it up. Some even dismiss it, and some do so while adding that women are still dealing with sexism. Yes, it's true, but that's not a reason to ignore it. It's not going to make it OK. Two wrongs do not make a right.

This is all a simplification, but that's the jist of it.

So yes, sexism is still very much a thing. On both fronts. Anyone who says it isn't is delusional, or just plainly not paying attention.

The main issue is in the dating world now. Too many guys feel like they are entitled to getting a girlfriend by putting in the least amount of effort, and often blame feminism for their lackadaisical efforts when it comes to dating instead of self reflecting. I think women should make more of an effort to start interactions with guys they are interested in. Assertiveness can be a good thing, and its 2013, but I don't equate a womans choice not to approach as a sexism issue as some guys do. If they don't want to, then its there right. As a guy, you should take charge, adapt and not whine about it. Generally speaking though, a lot of people like to sing the tune promoting liberty, equality and personal freedoms of choice, right up until the point those sweet benefits are tasted by a group they don't belong to. At that point, hypocrisy usually sets in, usually in the form of "that groups problems are imaginary."

The only reason much of this doesn't bother me at all is, strangely enough, is due to the rise of China and emerging markets in Asia. In a few years time, Asia is going to financially humble the U.S. and much of the western world in a way that will break the very backbone of our arrogance. Then, we can either continue to ignore each other, where we will quickly become ethnographic material for Chinese anthropologists to study, or we can choose to not ignore the problems and actually work together to reclaim the 21st century from the Asians

This question is very difficult to answer. First of all, we have to define 'sexism'. If sexism is simply treating someone differently on account of his or her sex, then everyone who isn't totally 50/50 bisexual, is definitely a sexist, and even such a bisexual person might still be a sexist in some other way.

You can have equal rights, but 'equality' in any other sense is very vague. What does it mean? And what is 'society'? 'Society' isn't a mind of its own. It doesn't have any opinions. Individuals have opinions.

Feminism actually came AFTER equal rights, though feminists did retrospectively label the nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century reformers as 'first-wave feminists'.

You know what I see? Many women who wish men were more masculine. And many men who feel like they've been lied to.

There are three issues that I think are important though. Abortion should be totally legal. Child support should also be voluntary. And male genital mutilation should be illegal, as female genital mutilation is. While feminists and MRAs may have things to say on these, those are two flawed approaches, because it's ultimately a lack of respect for the individual that has caused the continued infringement of individual rights. Feminism and men's rights activism are forms of collectivism, which put the good of the collective above the good of the individual. Of course, the collective is as subjective an idea as society and is therefore open to be defined by whoever holds power.

First of all, sexism doesn't only depend on America, a lot of world countries have similar problem especially in Turkey (generally big cities Istanbul, Izmir) sexism and femen politicy are.very significant problem because women think they need to obtain some women rights on the world. For example a Turkish journalist had said this "Tripping as the pregnant is terrible and in-moral, perverted situation, it may triggles male orgasm and it can turn on boys" After his words, lots of women went on the street ti demonstrate this opinion. Unfirtunately our women are being accepted secondary classed person and a lot of people deport them thus, sexism and femenism has been become very impirtant issue all around the world. It is not related with just America. It's a global problem.

Define sexism. If you define it by the sexes being "equal" of course it exists, but that's a terrible definition. "Equal" is a mathematical term that's nothing but theory and doesn't exist in the real world. No two things are "equal" in the real world.

Men and women are not equal, never have been, and never will be. Men and women are different, so trying to pretend they are the same is just plain silly. What's so wrong with acknowledging the differences? Isn't that the entire reason for the existence of gag? The entire idea of girls asking guys what they think, and guys asking girls what they think reflects the difference.

Bottom line is that men and women are not the same, nor should they be.

I think it doesn't help that some guys criticize all feminists as feminazis or something. This is really discriminatory. I say, get to know a girl who calls her feminist first, before blaming her for things she hasn't done.

A lot of guys on here criticize the girls or feminism, and if the girls get angry, then they blame feminism, when it's actually the guy's fault. If people could just accept each other, then there would be no sexism.

I think it's really sexist of some guys to say that feminists have to be able to take a beating from a guy or that there should be a draft for women too. It's like, those guys already lost the debate about whether or not women should be able to join the military/infantry (whatever it's called), and now they want the opposite of what they were originally fighting for.

I don't think there is sexism against men though. If there is, if someone points it out to me, I'll think about it though.

Absolutely, but that doesn't mean its a bad thing.  There are still lots of bias and stereotyping in the world.  There is a reason that men and women are different genders, and are physically and mentally built differently.  For example, women no matter how good fundamentally they become cannot compete with men at many sports.  Is this a bad thing?  Is this sexist towards women?

Sexism? You mean, recognizing that the sexes are different, not equal in multiple areas, and that gender is in part, destiny? Like, saying that your average guy will almost always be a more effective soldier than the average woman? Or saying that a woman is more inclined to things like childcare professions than men?

The only way for "sexism" to stop is for women to become men, or men to become women. Neither is a good idea.
