Can you be friends with Trump supporters?

Question

The original image in black was circulating around the internet, but a new version has come out that explains why some don't think you can't be friends with Trump supporters or reasons for their distaste of Trump supporters. I think some people's thought is that in previous years even when one side or the other lost, that the winning candidate didn't have so many negatives against them spread throughout their lives and into the present in regards to their treatment of people, so there was no real issue with remaining friends with those with opposing views or beliefs. Your thoughts?

If liberals are so bigoted that they can't talk to me because of who I voted for, then that's fine. It's not like I'm missing out on knowing a great person or anything.

Story time:

I work at a college library... you can probably guess what the voting demographics are right? Yep every single person in the library is liberal but me. All 19 staff. So I'm sure you can imagine some of the stuff I go through every day. Around election time I got asked probably 5 times who I was voting for. I knew they wouldn't like the answer, so I strategically dodged the question. Well election day rolled around and I went and voted, and then went in to work. Well at work 3 of my coworkers came up to me and said to me "Hey, we are a little concerned about you, it's election day and you clearly went to vote, but we think you might have voted for Trump"(that's paraphrased of course)... I was sitting there baffled that everyone cared this much about who I voted for, I really didn't care who they voted for (although I knew it was Hillary cause they told me 10 times). I really didn't care at this point, they kept bothering me so finally I told them "I voted for Trump"... immediately they looked at me and I could tell they genuinely did not like to hear that. They stood there for a minute and then one of them said "Yeah that's what we figured", and I said "Why is that?" and she was like "Because you seem like someone who would be dumb enough to make that choice".

Yeah she said "dumb enough"... I was sitting there in my head thinking "Excuse me, Carly, come on, you've always been nice to me, but you find out I voted for Trump and you call me dumb?"

I just smiled and nodded, and then went about my work. There wasn't much I could do, in a library with 19 liberals you can't really do much. Especially since Carly was my boss, and most of the other ones were higher up the social ladder than me. Since then I've somehow been "left out" of a couple workplace events (our library does breakfast once a month and they "forgot" to email me twice about it,), word got around that I voted for Trump and I'll walk into work and be greeted not with hello, but with "Did you see what Trump did last night, that buffoon, how could you vote for him"..."Nice to see you too" I'd say... it's really quite appalling how closed minded these librarians are. They celebrate gay pride day, half the staff are minorities, they accept all groups... except conservatives apparently.

I couldn't care less who my friends vote for. If someone was ACTUALLY a horrible person, I wouldn't be friends with them to begin with.

Some liberals are so blinded by their own hatred, they don't even see how hypocritical they sound. They call everyone who thinks differently than them a "racist, homophobic, bigot" but it's all just based on emotions, not facts. They like to make assumptions about why other people voted for Trump. Most people who voted for him do not "hate" minorities and it's extremely ignorant and illogical for so many on the left to assume that. Just because someone votes for a certain candidate does not mean they condone and applaud every single thing that person says or does.

The REALITY is, there are hateful assholes on both sides of the political spectrum. Some people are just not nice! That doesn't mean everyone in that particular political party are the same. I just wish these liberals (like the one who created that image you posted) realized that their hatred is only fueling the fire. You can't preach 'tolerance' and 'love trumps hate' while demonizing every person you see with a difference of opinion. That's not the way to bring people to your side and definitely not the way to get anyone else to want to understand where you're coming from.

People disagree on things all the time. I'm still good friends with Hillary, Bernie and Jeb supporters too.

A bigger problem for me is people who prefer Log Cabin or any of the other pancake syrups (mostly water and corn syrup) over real *maple* syrup. Tell you prefer the storebrand 'pancake' syrup over the real thing and I might unfriend you over that.

One of my friends is a Trump supporter. It's not something I like and he tends to try and be over the top about it (Trump bobblehead, Trump hat, Trump poster, American flag, anything vaguely Trump related and he has it) to get a reaction from the rest of us who don't like Trump. It's annoying but it's not the worst thing imaginable.

Believe it or not, its stuff like this that drives people toward Trump. The assumption of moral authority that allows one to judge being better than another. Its a common theme throughout history. The predominating view of the 18th and 19th centuries still haunts us today.

Growing up I met a guy in my school, I was 12 at the time, everyone said to not hang out with him, he was a bully and deserved to be alone, my mother told me that he needed friends the most, so she encouraged me to be his friend, first time I talked to him he punched me in the face, i did fight back, but that's not the point, we talked after that, and long story short we did become friends, we both needed friendship, and it was a great thing which made us both better, in my adult life I have met a lot of communists here in my country I disagree with them in almost everything you can disagree on, but I am friends with some of them, we talk politics sometimes, but we focus on what we have common not what makes us different, theyre not the devil some people believe them to be, they're people with dreams and hopes and people who have been hurt, I rather spend my life trying to heal and love those around me than hating them, and alienating them, no, I'm not stupid, I know when I'm being targeted, and I am very well prepared to defend myself, but this people like this "bob" they're not my enemies, they don't deserve my hate, trump won, deal with it, take the chances you have to make the world a better place, but Dont act like you are right in hating just cause another person sees things differently than you, ohhh and I'm not even American but I know some Americans who voted for trump who don't hate women, are not supporters of the KkK, didn't find it funny when he mocked the disable reporter, so give people a chance

I surround myself with those that refuse to talk politics, and I never tell anyone who I support. So, some of my friends could be Trump supporters and I have no idea. That's just the way I like it. Politics have ruined too much already, I don't need it ruining my friendships.

I couldn't be friends with someone who's a Trump supporter. Why? Because I'm black and I'm a woman. A Trump supporter would never be interested in being my friends with me. And I wouldn't want to be associated to a person who agrees with Trump.
However I know there's people who don't let their differences ruin their friendship.
I guess these elections have changed people.

If someone is completely obnoxious about politics regardless of side, I tend to avoid them.
This is just silly though. Most of that stuff is a stretch and it does no good to push people away like that. Doesn't end well for us. I don't know what the breaking point would be, but I don't think anyone truly wants to see it, especially not the ones trying to cause such division.

I tried. I can't. The ones I met were mostly real bigots who believe in conversion therapy like Pence and all shit. Also, they take a Jesus photo in front of Planned Parenthood nearby and create visual pollution. Can't take their ignorance. Sorry.
