How long did getting over your heartbreaks take?

I am asking only in the times when you "fell in love" and it broke, how long did it take to get over it?

  • Depends on the reasoning of the break up, etc. I was with a guy for about 2 years, caught him cheating on me numerous times. I really loved him though, but each time I caught him, I fell that much more out of love with him. I was pretty dumb to not break it off right then but I was blind. When I finally broke up with him on the third time cheating, it only took me about a week or so because I was actually drifting away. For another instance, it took me about four months to get over him, but it was because we decided we would just be friends afterwards. Due to being friends, the feelings still lingered but I eventually was able to let go.

    THIS IS NOT RELEVANT ANYMORE
    • When you were friends with him did you see him move on with another girl?

    • Eventually I did yes, which made it hard and forced me into reality to move on.

    • Thanks for most helpful :)

  • Back in high school I had convinced myself that I was in love with this dick head that broke up with me on our one month anniversary. He made his friend text me to tell me he was breaking up with me. He was cheating on me!! Lol. (I later learned what real love is). Anyway, because I was stupid, it took me over a year (!!!) To get over this idiot. Now I know what real love is and I hope I never lose it.

    • Did you get a realization on what love is? I feel I may be a little naive on that. Could you tell me what you understood or realized about love?

  • The first guy I thought I loved, I was with for two years but he cheated on me. I cried once and got over it within days/weeks. I thought he wasn't worth thinking about.

The second guy, I fell for but I had to leave because he became abusive, he was a psychopath. It took me over a year to get over the relationship. It took about 6 months to get over HIM.

    • It surprises me you got over your first love rather quick. I hope you found love now? I often wonder about the trusting part. I don't feel I can trust again because I did care for this girl and there was a lot of deception, lies for reasons I don't understand yet. And I really elevated her in my mind as someone I would do anything for. I often feel I can't trust to that level again. And with doubting, I don't know if one can truly love. Did you feel difficulty trusting after any of the relationships?

    • Both my ex's threatened to send girls down to "beat me up" after our break ups so you get over them quicker when that happens. Not so much when they stalk you though.

    • Okay. I feel the same way - people wear masks. And its harder to understand the more accomplished you are. The statistics on divorces and break ups aren't helping either. I feel sad when you say something like " though he lies and is deceptive but it's a step up from being cheated and abused!" - like you are settling for something. I am picky, and that's exactly why I have only had one. At times I feel she is the one and only, but I know that's just me imagining things. Having that someone for you certainly makes life a lot happier. But I guess its difficult with all the lies and pretending that often goes on.

  • Short answer: never. You get over the person, but you never get over the heartbreak.

Part of becoming a real adult is for a member of the opposite sex to destroy you emotionally and rip out your soul, leaving a scar that keeps you from trusting most people ever again.

At least that's my experience, but that might just be me.

    • Actually I am at that point where I am finding it harder to trust because of a previous experience :-/ I was wondering if people lose the ability to fall intensely in love again. How long has it been since your break up?

    • Don't do it, cut ties and let things start to heal. Things are always going to feel undone if she is still part of the picture.

    • But it would look like bringing up things if the past. The thing is we started as friends and at one point it was ne who begged to have her in my life. It would look silly asking her to break a distant friendship especially when I hardly see her. I am just letting it be.

  • Well I can't give you an answer yet, since my BU is fresh. But the woman who I loved dearly, my first love, the woman who where i would stop time and space itself just to please her, left me for her ex. Its been a month and Im a lot better than the week the break up happened and I still miss her but I have along ways before Im over it.

  • 3 or 4 days. Mind you the love was gone long before the official break up.

    • It looks like getting over a break up when the love is lost during the relationship period is easier. I imagine it would be more of a relief in that circumstance.

    • A relief is the word. It felt like a weight was lifted from my shoulders

  • Longest was about 6 months. Hurt like hell. Shortest was 2 weeks.

    • Where you in love with her?

    • Okay. Lol I wanted to know about the most intense attachment and how long it took to get over it. Forty minutes seemed kind of small. I would take more than 40 minutes to get over a sweet escort I just spent time with lol

    • That is a good thing. Cherish that.
