I have had both and they were awesome.
Cats are easier to take care of and require less attention but will demand it more at night than during the day. My cat was particularly affectionate and laid down nearby most of the time. She would play some but if you did it wrong or petted her the wrong way, watch out.
Dogs require more work because of the need for them to usually go outside for recreation and to relieve themselves. They also require more attention and are quite fun to play with. My dog had no places that she did not get bothered to be petted.
It depends on what you are looking for: more active in taking care of or more independent1THIS IS NOT RELEVANT ANYMORE
