He broke up with me out of the blue? Should I text back or wait for his text?

I'm gonna be out of town for temporary work for 2 years next fall. He said its too long to make it work long distance but im coming back for the summer AND breaks!! Once a month for 2 years won't work out for him and he just cut everything off just like that. He was very contradicting because he really loves me and I know that. I hated seeing him cry. I heard if someone loves you they will make it work out if it is possible and I DO believe its possible. I am very confused why we just broke up because of this reason :(
We were together for 7 months...
