I recently broke up with someone over text, it was nothing serious. But he didn’t seem to get it and still thinks we’re dating. How do I say that the message was meant as a breakup

Have you ever met him in person? If yes, then you should break up with him IN PERSON. That's what adults do, so it's good practice since one day you'll be one.
If you've never met and this was just some on-line thing, it hardly matters. Just send a message saying "I'm breaking it off with you. We're done. Get it? "

Tell him point blank, preferably in person, that it's over.
Don't sugar coat it, nothing sweet, "This isn't working out, it's over between us."
If you make it nice he will try & say you must be joking. Being direct is the best approach.
