Do couples stick together anymore through tough times or is love fickle?

Question

I feel that it seems to take the smallest thing for couples to break up especially the amount that have broken up in the pandemic.

I don’t understand why people don’t tough things out anymore and instead just give up on a relationship that aside from the downs was actually good?

Love isn't fickle- people are. Hollywood tells them that love is all smiles and rainbows and elaborate musical numbers, when it's just as often frowns and growls, barely has ANY musical numbers (and that's usually only if you insist on them), and rainbows, well, they only come after a rain.

Relationships aren't found; they're built. That's what no one seems to understand.

I agree and this is what hurts as my ex left me due to the stress I was under in the pandemic as he couldn’t take anymore and broke up with me. Couples go through tough times to show that they can triumph over adversity

Ouch. I think the worst part of it is that it becomes self-sustaining; kids who grow up seeing the adults around them starting and ending relationships so casually are much less likely to stick around difficult ones themselves.

Thank you, it does really hurt I guess the thing is that I feel I put more into the relationship since I was willing to stick around even through tough times

Sounds like. Would that there were some way to know what both participants want, and decided to get involved or not accordingly. Sure, we have words, but sometimes people don't even know what they want, or how far they'll go.

Couples should always stick together through rough times. Except for abuse or cheating, there is nothing that can't be worked through.

I know. It does make me wonder too. Plenty too, but breaking up does seem more common now. I’d say it’s not likely in your younger years so much because you’re both growing tonnes and often people grow apart, it’s also good to not feel trapped like people may have in the past too. But I think as people get older they’re more in it for the long run.

A lot of people are struggling in lockdown to be honest. He obviously had his own stuff he was probably trying to handle too.

Yeah but some people struggle with that. You can help someone by letting them know you’re there for them too and then it’s up to them.

I did and said two months after the breakup that I was sorry for how I behaved and asked if he would be open to trying again and if he wanted to take things slow or needed more space I understood but he wasn’t interested
