I've tried the whole "prove your love by doing everything to keep her" thing, and seen it more times than I care to remember. At best it ends up with a short reprieve followed by massive emotional heartbreak when one of the other decides that they never wanted to get back together and the whole thing was doomed to failure from the begining, thus shattering the other person who has been trying hard.
Compromise is core to making a relationship work. But it should be equal compramise, and the second one person is working to 'keep' their partner the relationship is already doomed.
