What's considered a date?

I use date for two reasons but people are confused about what I mean. When I go out with my friends for a while I call that a date. I've never been on a "romantic date" so I don't know what constitutes as a DATE? Am I using it wrong? I ask because I'm going out with a guy friend of mine that I like and I can't tell if it's just friendly or more because he's a bit awkward (in a cute way)

  • A "Date" is generally considered romantic. Unless you qualify it by saying something like "I've got a dinner date with a girlfriend/guy friend. A "Get together" is not romantic and can represent 2 or more friends meeting for drinks/dinner/whatever.

    • I'll add that if the get together has the prospects of being romantic you can call it a date.
