Is losing interest in someone simply because he/she shows too much interest in you really a thing? Why do we do this?

Too much too soon comes off as clingy and desperate. Im thinking if you sell yourself that short, then the relationship only exists because you'll take anyone - it doesn't feel special. When you don't have to work for something (like affection) it doesn't feel as good when you get it.
People who can ride the line between interest and indifference usually have an air of self assurance and confidence about them, and that is a very attractive trait.0

I don't lose interest but I tend to step back a bit and re-evaluate our relationship if it feels like we are not on the same page1
