How to support new boyfriend through his fathers death?

So my newish boyfriends father is dying.

He went through a messy separation and has kids, so we haven’t yet introduced me to his family yet. It’s officially only been 2 months we have been together, even though it’s actually closer to 8.

For context, I haven’t introduced him to my family either.

However, his dad is dying. And I feel awful I can’t help my boyfriend more. We don’t live together, I can’t help round his house. Because I don’t know his family, I can’t help with hospital visits or kids. He is very proud but will not ask for help. What can I do to show him I care and what can I do to support him?

  • Just be there for him. Give him your condolences. Bake him a pie. Buy a sympathy card.

  • Nothing. He will shut down, shut you out completely, have no room for a relationship, emotion, sex, love or anything else. He will act like you do not exist. That's what grief does. You be patient and let him grieve.
