Start a conversation on something you guys might have in common (if you're in a class with them or the same job or whatever) or ask a question relating to the place you're in when you approach them.

    Smile smile smile. But don't show too much teeth. If your clothes are clean and you don't stand too close then you'll appear clean and polite
