How much would you spend on a typical date or the perfect date?

So I was reading an article in yahoo about how much a typical date in New York costs.

  • I can't believe people are spending $100 - $200 on a date! That is crazy! I usually spend about $10 - $20 dollars - me and my boyfriend will order aa large pizza or a large nacho dinner and 2 glasses of wine and then split everything 50/50.

  • A typical date would be dinner. We take turns paying with my boyfriend. So if it'd be my turn to pay, the costs would be something like this:

A dinner for two with drinks: 30-40€ depending on where we eat.
A night snack at my place: 5-10€.

So a total of 50€ at the highest, which is around $57. There's usually no other costs. I don't own a car and use public transport (I have a monthly ticket) and my boyfriend either parks his car in a free spot (there are plenty) or takes the bus as well. After dinner we go to my place, put on a movie or a TV show and maybe have a snack later.

I'd gladly pay more if we do something new or exciting, I don't mind.

  • Under $50. He can come over my place and I'll make him dinner and we can watch a good movie after. It's nice because it's so simple and we can relax. I'm someone who doesn't like spending money, especially his hard earned money. I have no interest going somewhere crazy.

  • Date night at my house consists of cooking burgers at my house and making homemade chocolate chip cookies paired with vanilla Blue Bell ice cream. That's less than $30.

  • I don't know why everyone is expected to spend a lot of money on a date that may be a one time affair. I can have as much fun going to OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) and taking a walk through Oaks Park as I can going to some down town restaurant and Nightclub. It's not what you do, it's who you're with. And that can be priceless.

  • I’d split the bill unless it were a special occasion like his birthday or an anniversary. I don’t like the expectation for guys to have to pay for everything on a date.

  • I think "the perfect date" is up for individual interpretation.
Helicopter ride across the city, sure but personally i think thats a bit much.
I doesn't matter what him and I do, even if its a drive around the city, thats cool with me. As long as i am with him I am content.

  • We have lower cost in Germany. Parking is often free because my boyfriend has permit or just 0,50€ per hour, per meal you pay around 9-14€ with a drink. Movie is 5,99€ per Person and I don’t know what a dive bar is

  • I live in NY, and lemme tell you, NYC is very different from the rest of NY. So, here, the max you can spend on a date is probably 70$-100$. In my county, at least. NYC is looking to rip off tourists.

  • Depends on the date. If it holds significance. I'm happy with a trip to mcdonald's for a date, so that's about £15

  • My god are they think *-*
In my country people barely spend money on a date, especially young people who live in the countryside like me. It's just go to the nearest cheaper shop buy cookie and sit where you can. This is a typical date where I live.

  • I would say that an average date for me costs about $50-75. Usually that means food (maybe just some appetizers), gas, and often an activity, like pool or bowling or mini golf or shooting. Sometimes a concert or a movie if something good is out.

I'm happy to be in the suburbs and not in a major city where parking costs a fortune and so does everything else.

  • On a first date, I like to begin at a nice, relatively upscale restaurant and then go to a nice lounge for a few drinks and some live music. Typical first date for me is $100-150. Once i am in a relationship, every date is not $150 but I still plan such dates occasionally. Other dates may be $50-75 but sometimes we go to the beach and that only costs a few bucks for whatever food we take with us.

  • That's crazy, even for Manhattan. It doesn't have to cost that much. Take the subway, for starters or go to a Matinee.

  • Damn I'm cheap.
I spend hardly anything when on a date.
I learned a long time ago to get very creative with dates. Coming up with different things to do that cost virtually nothing. I got mostly complemented on the ingenuity with lots of second, third, and fourth dates.
Think about it. Do what every other guy out there does, or be unique. Which would she rather choose? The "Okay, here we go again." guy or the "This is different, what are we doing?" guy.

  • Don't forget the bullshit where she makes a completely insincere offer to "chip in" which if accepted she will never go out again with you. I've never seen a woman pick up a tab other than a birthday but they sure have no problem ordering appetizers, specialty drinks, etc.

  • Depends what it is and who it is.
Was seeing someone back in June, they didn't have much money so kept things low key and cheap, found things we could do for free, walks along the promenade, museums etc.
Seeing someone now whos has different tastes. Went to theatre last night (£120), she insisted on picking up tab for dinner (£90). Very different types of date. Both enjoyable

  • that map seems hard to believe and seems to focus on people going on dates in high costs areas. i live in pennsylvania and have spent close to $200 only on special occasion dates. i've routinely gone on dates in philadelphia and spent less than $50, most often maybe spend $50-100 but again that is a more special date and i'm covering all the costs.

  • I've never dated before, but I think spending $200 - $300 is WAY too much to spend on a FIRST date. I think a date that would cost hundreds of dollars is better spend on a date night with someone who your already in a relationship with. But at the same time, we're talking about New York here, so its "no shit Sherlock" that its going to be expensive. I mean there's NOTHING close to "fancy" in the broke small town I live in.

  • I know people who could spend a grand and still not be happy. I also know others who can have a lovely date making pasta together in the kitchen, renting a Redbox movie and spending less than ten dollars for the whole shot. If the people and the chemistry is right, the rest just doesn't matter very much. On a sidenote for those into baseball, since MLB has just about priced itself out of the market, many towns have minor league teams offering a nice time at far lower prices.

    • oh trust me I know that. Tickets here are insane (Yankees) Surprising the Mets tickets still are the same price..

  • It says the average cost for me is $195. That is more than I spend on food for an entire month. Sorry but unless we have front row tickets for a concert or something there is no way I would spend that much on a date.

  • That's the price you pay for the big city life. Maybe find some coupons on websites to save a little on dinner and the movie. Find a ladies night for the bar. These things will save you money. Where I live, for $300, you can do dinner, movie, nightclub or nice bar, plus a 4 or 5 star hotel.

  • The perfect date would be when we both don't spend anything/much yet have a blast. I'm thinking museums, galleries.

But I mean a perfect date would be a cruise, but that would be a girl you'd know for a while ig.

  • The answer to this is going to vary hugely depending on your country, city or rural, and your age.

For me, at 30 in London, a typical date would be around the $200-300 mark after exchange rate.
