She beat him up and bruised him and she’s an abusive person... why does he keep her around?

My buddy has been dating this woman for 5 months... she’s very jealous and controlling... doesn’t allow him to have friends or go out, fights him when he doesn’t call back right away, has grabbed his phone and looked into it, and restricts him from talking to certain people and asks him to dress a certain way when she goes out with him- which doesn’t suit him...

she also went as far as far as threatening him to go home one night and then went straight to his house to see if he was home...

this woman has also physically hit him before and she gets crazy on him... she has also humiliated him publically to his friends and had defamed him...

this is past weekend she grabbed a metal flashlight and hit him and bruised him up badly... his whole arm was purple and black and his hip , crotch area and leg and his whole body was aching him to the point where he had to take a pain killer...
He keeps saying he's done with her and doesn’t love her yet she keeps coming back to his house and says he wants to get help for her cuz he doesn’t wanna see anyone go to jail.
Why isn’t he letting her go? Is he scared of her? Or does he not know how to let her go? Or is he in love with her and that’s why he puts up with it?
