Is it really that bad to tell a guy I’m simply not interested in him?

I’m 25. I’ve had plenty of guys ask me out the last 10 or so years and, most of them are great guys but I just didn’t feel it. I’ve had to come up with all sorts of excuses because I don’t want to hurt their feelings or because it’s known as being “rude” but I’m honestly so over that. I’d rather be honest and straightforward so I have started telling guys straight up I don’t see them that way, I’d like to be friends, but nothing more.
is there anything wrong with that? My mom kinda frowns at me because she says I should say “I’m just not looking for anything right now” but that is a FLAT out LIE. I am so single and ready to find someone. I don’t see why I need to lie and part of the time I feel like others know it’s an excuse anyways.
