Senpai does not sound English to me and therefore, I am totally unable to give you a reply as to the meaning of the term and why he would call your this name. Perhaps it is short for an another name or a nickname.

like if i am 17 and a person is one grade above me in school , i will call them senpai.
it basically refers to someone a little experienced than you

But this term is used in anime a lot. In anime it is just a cute way of calling someone who is older than you.

It's a Japanese word. The term definition for it is as follows: "Senpai is an upperclassman who mentors an underclassman". It is also used as a trope in Romantic Anime stories where the underclassman has a crush/in love with their Senpai. He is most likely being playful with you and flirting in his own way. Now, if he is a grade lower than you, then he is using it in the right context.
