Many people can make racist jokes without actually been racist. Think about all the comedians that do it. However the right crowd is needed and for it be sorta clear that it was intended as so.
Like i've made sexists jokes before but if you knew me i am anything but sexist and when they were said it was clear i was joking not my actual narrow views.
