Look at the expression from left to right: you see 6, division, 2, implied multiplication, pair of brackets, then 1 + 2 inside the bracket which is equal 3. No other information is given, using the basic arithmetic rules, The answer is 6 ÷ 2 * 3 = 9. People who arrive at 1 either:- Misused PEMDAS by interpreting M before D as multiplication must be done before division - Made an extra assumption that implied multiplication must be done before other things. This convention is from algebra, when you have expressions such as 1/2x, then it is justified. This is not algebra, literally nobody uses that rule when only numbers are present. Now kids, don't make extra assumptions when they are not needed, use Occam's razor or common sense. This is also perhaps the only reason some educated people are defending this answer, because it reminds them of high school pre algebra, and being educated doesn't necessarily make you rational ("b... but look at the spacing!" then you're making up another rule about the precedence of spacing).- Made some other ridiculous arithmetic mistakes, like having a pair of brackets means everything that touches them from the inside or outside must be done first (so in 2(1+2), the precedence of (1 + 2) would affect the 2 outside 😂).The fact that all people who arrived at the answer 9 are using the same reasoning while people arrived at the answer 1 don't even agree on their reasoning is the biggest hint that if you got 1 you are simply being sloppy in your thinking.
I think the answer is 1 but I don’t believe there’s really a convention here (and one reason that division symbol is rarely used beyond very simple problems. The reason i say 1 is that if we were doing algebra, and I presented you with :6 / 2yYou would interpret it without question as6 / (2 X y)And never 6 / 2 X y‘2y’ is technically 2 X y but I’d say the bracket is understood. So I argue that 2(1+2) is understood as being a unit, and that the problem indicates to divide 6 by that entire term.
9. Using PEMDAS in order, you'd multiply 2 by the sum of (1+2) and you'd get 1. However, from left to right, the division comes first so you'd get the quotient of (6÷2) first THEN multiply by the sum of (1+2) and get 9. People get tripped up and multiply first because M comes before D in PEMDAS but it's what appears first in the equation that matters.
It's a poorly written problem, as the grouping is unclear. You can go by the classic order of operations, but no one pays much attention to that anymore because computers do all the arithmetic and you have to program the order of operations, rather than draw them right.
3(1+2)=3*3=9.Suppose that 0.0001% of the population had the disease. Say that the test was 99.9% accurate, i. e. it gave you a correct result 99.9%. If you went to the doctor and the test gave back a positive result, what is the probability of having the disease?
it's an ambiguous question. it was written in a way to make it confusing. example: if i wrote 1/2x do i mean 1/2 x or 1/(2x)? same here. it could be seen as 6/2(3) or 6/2 * 3. either 1 or 9 is correct. but that's why no one uses ÷ anymore
6/2(1+2), by order of operations=6/2(3)=6/2*3, by order of operations=3*3=99 is the answer
Alternately, if you were to consider 2(1+2) a single unit, the answer would be as follows:6/2(1+2)=6/(2*3)=6/6=1In this case, one was the answer, but I'm fairly certain my first answer was correct. Either way, this problem was poorly formatted. Such a simple problem should probably have the numerator and denominator more clearly labeled.
It is 9 since division and multiplication are ranked equally, you shall go from left to rightTopic: Order of Operations: "PEMDAS"1) Parenthesis first: 6 / 2 (1+2) ==> 1+2=3 ==> 6/2(3) a. 2(3) is the same as 2*32) Divide first: 6/2 *3 ==> 6/2=3 ==> 3*33) Multiply: 3*3 =9
The answer would be 1 if the problem was the following:6/(2(1+2))
3But I am pretty bad at math, so I could be wrong...😏
The answer is 9Parenthesis first =3Exponent Division LEFT to RIGHT next : 6 diveded by 2 = 3Multiplication next 3 (3) = 9
I would say 1 because, if it was meant to be taken sequentially, I think they would have explicitly but the "x" operator and spaces between the operator, the parenthesis and the "2".
6/6 is 1Now I forgot what the E stands for in PENDAS
@Just_a_human That's what I thought, but now I don't remember what an exponent is
It's "PEMDAS"=> Parenthesis, Exponent, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction
The answer is 9. The brackets is 3 and half of 6 multipled by 3 equals 9.
Nine. Brackets, then left to right. 6:2(1+2) = 6:2(3) = 3x3 = 9
it should be 1 the way i wasn't taught
6/2(1+2)It’s just a fraction 6/6
6÷2(1+2)6÷2÷33÷31The answer is 1.
1 yes the answer must be 1
1 or 9(if done incorrectly)
If it's PEMDAS, it's one
six the answer is 6
whoops 9 i added the 3 s
1 is the answer
One. Uno. 😜😎
It's that stupid pedmas parentheses exponent division multiplication addition subtraction
9 is the answer
