I work for the job centre and my boss told me I need to be more assertive with customers. I asked her what she meant, but she just said to be more pushy with them.

Try to stop accommodating everything. Ex. If you're busy and someone asks for help say something like "Sorry, I can't help you right now. Maybe after I finish whatever I'm doing."
