There are other things, like antagonism, discrimination, sabotage and the very common situations of someone else getting "your" raise or promotions for "unfair" or just other reasons. I only focused on the two points you raised in the question.
But might asking help push them more in the direction of prioritizing you over someone who didn't ask?
Not a chance. That puts them at risk for favoritism.
