She told me she's been looking for a job for 10 years. How can you not get a job?

She used to have a normal career and a good job in high tech but claims she's been looking for a job for 10 years and hasn't been able to get hired. Her husband pays the bills. I have no problem with traditional situations but she's got to be lying, right? How can you not get a job in 10 years of searching?

She's looking - just not that hard. 1 application every 5 months.

When we lose a job our bills don't suddenly stop coming in. So whenever I hear about people not working for a extended time after losing a job and they are looking one, it's a huge red flag. Because the best thing you can do is get a temp job to keep money coming in while you are looking for a new job that is like the one you lost.

Heck I was laid off and ended up working part-time at a gas station and grocery store the same week. Just to make damn sure I didn't fall behind on paying my bills. Losing job can really suck and that very true if it's a good one. But you have to suck it up and ensure your bills are still being paid. Because more often then not being unwilling to get any job you can as a stop gap, you definitely end up a hell of a lot worse off then you would be if you did.

When you MUST pay your own way, you discover you possess all manner of marketable skills. You can babysit, wait tables, clean houses, flip burgers, work security, etc.

I hold a doctorate degree and I've sorted spoilt produce, rung registers, was a home builder's & electrician's apprentice, a mechanical draftsman, sold Fuller brushes, washed cars, been a soldier and a security guard BECAUSE my Landlord doesn't care. My Utilities and Grocery bills DON'T care.

LOL. A good friend of mine's wife claimed for the longest time that she could not find a job. When my friend retired and was home all day, every day, and began working on numerous (noisy) remodeling projects around the house, his wife suddenly found a job!

I said "A", big difference between looking for a job, and really wanting a job. So I would assume she is aiming to high, has a bad work history or criminal record... or she's a lying, lazy lay-about and her husband is a enabler that allows her to get away with it.

Any ordinary person would have easily concluded she's lying about it for some reason. There isn't a need to obsess over it who cares. Agree with person who says she may have something going on that's nobody's business. Whether its she's lazy, has a criminal record, she's lying, or it's true, or whatever... well from her point of view she is retired with security while still young enough to enjoy it. No downside. Her hubby supports her and she has freedom and time to pursue whatever interests her. Damn, that's a pretty good definition of success!!!

When I talked to her 4-5 years ago... she had the same story, except then it was that she'd been looking for 5 years or whatever. Disagree about 1 year gap being the end of the world BUT yes, it would make it more difficult. At the 2-3 year gap then you'll have major problems. Most people are smart enough to have something on their resume to compensate: self-employment (even if it's not true), working for cousin Joe's auto repair shop (even if it's only on paper) or hey, starting over. I'd say - based on my experience - stuff on a resume that is even 20 years old DOES count, if it happens to be highly specialized and relevant. If it's making hotdogs then it doesn't. The problem is that background checks are a pain in the azzz for some old jobs at smaller companies so at some point it's not worth having old stuff on a resume.
