Would you quit your job if you had to cover for two receptionists?

I work as an office assistant. Part of my job is reception cover so I have to cover for the receptionists when they're on leave or sick.

I have been at this job for two years. We have a chat history so I can go back and see how often we've been away.

In total, I've been away 4 times.

Receptionist #1 has been away 15 times on sick leave.

Receptionist #2 has been away 23 times on sick leave.

Receptionist #2 is practically away every Monday fortnight, then Receptionist #1 is away in between.

I know this is my job but there is only so much you can do.

Receptionist #2 was sick on 28th May and yesterday also.

I went to my manager and all she said was, this is part of your job.

I don't understand how Receptionist #2 isn't fired yet. She started a week after me.

I'm getting really annoyed with #2 absence.

My friend thinks I'm being petty and I should be grateful I have a job, I am but there sick leave is a bit much right?

Keep this in mind: Your fellow employees aren't the enemy. The employer is the enemy. If your co-workers are avoiding working and you're getting stuck with their work, that means they're playing the system better than you are. They're inconveniencing the employer, and the employer is offsetting that by inconveniencing you in turn. If you end up resenting your co-workers rather than the work that is making them sick, then the capitalists have already brain-washed you.

What do I need to do? If I took all that leave like they do, I'd be the one getting fire. Not them as they are still here.

I have about 18 sick days. My plan is to not come into work on the 23 and 24 December as. our Christmas break

If u want more days off u can call sick or just take days off 👍🏻

Talk to your boss first. You should be getting adequate compensation for this bs.


If there isn’t any reasonable progress (either towards compensation or a new hire) and you’re feeling overwhelmed then look for a new job, and when you get it turn in your two weeks notice.

Yeah, I’d be looking for another job. You can’t control how much someone else is calling out and your job requires you to basically deal with it.
